Thanks for the replies fellas. Yeah, it sure does look like the Morris. That's a big plus! Should be firing it up in a week or so. I'll check in when that happens.

DDM, thanks for the wall compliment. Service tradition on both sides of the family.

It should also have a "helper" spring with it.

These are not fixed mags. They have (sort of) automatic advance and manual retard.
Ides is you retard the mag by hand to start.
Once started the engines vibrations along with the helper spring pull the mag around to a fully advanced position.
But you can just reach down and help it advance by hand.

For best results time using a buzz box. They always manage to be a little tricky to get into the correct position during installation.
Nut maybe that's just me. I am old.

Just remember. Counter Clock Wise (CCW) is the way the hands on your clock turn when your clock is running in reverse (backwards). Simple.

AND ! If you are holding mag and looking at the gear end the mag turns Clock Wise when running. But if your looking at the top of the mag (at the points) the mag turns CCW.

I always find myself making little circles in the air with my finger.

But check that in the book too.
Remember, I am old.

No, looking down at the top of a mag or vertical circuit breaker the rotation is CW.

Nosecone ignitions turn CCW.

You must be south of the equator. Does your clock really run in reverse?

Only when I put the batteries in backwards. Positive to negative.

Oh wait. Maybe negative to positive ?

Duzzinmadder. Time means nothing to you once you get dementia. Try it, you'll see !

Yeah thanks guys, I know how to time a mag. I run one on my 69 CH. So with this Morris "auto-advance" the positions for retard and advance are maintained by those 2 horizontal set screws? And the 2 mount nuts are left slightly loose so the mag can be moved, correct?

If all goes well today I'll see if it will start and run.

This covid-19 lockdown was timed just right . I picked this bike up in Florida right after Bike Week. Been working on it pretty steady since. Getting zero static from the misses.

correct.when it starts the vibration of the motor combined with the spring will pull it to the advanced position for riding.

Update. Not gonna mess with the retard/advance. Just like the 69 I have this locked at full advance. No trouble starting in 2 or 3 kicks.

Just today got the S&S MGAL squared away and mounted, double checked all mag related stuff, started kicking and she starts good and sounds great. This beater has a set of beat up 65A mufflers and they sound real nice.

Still got some assembly to do and then carb tuning.

Thanks for all the help. This is a great forum.

The two set screws are for setting maximum advance and maximum retard.

If you use the auto advance it's necessary to at least set maximum advance. If not, duzzinmadder.

Starts in 2-3 kicks ?

We can fix that too.

You want the problems to be in the ignition or the carby ? Maybe both !

Do you have a source for intermediates wih the L Series ?

No I do not. I have a friend that has one, he's 860 miles away. It will be a week or so until I start dialing in the carb. Maybe I'll luck out and the intermediate tube looking jet that's in it (stamped with a single 4) will be right. I have some main jets, so good there.

I'll check back in then. Thanks for the info and replies.
