Default 1000cc engine with missing right side vin. Belly and Primary stamp pics

I just got this engine from a pile of parts a racer guy had. The engine has "1964 XLCH" stamped on the right side where the factory vin should be. My thoughts are a racer trying to run a 1000cc motor passing it off as a 900cc early model. It was setup in a frame with the right hand shift.

The number stamped in the primary is 775253080 and the belly numbers read 77424748 but are crossed out and someone stamped 775253080 to match the primary stamp is my best guess.

Do the belly numbers look factory (minus the fact they are crossed out) and is it weird to have the primary number read a 775 prefix while the belly is a 774?

Maybe, but I really doubt it. They are too many other "tells" to distinguish a 900 vs 1000 cc motor.

How about posting pics of the left & right side cases ?

Are belly numbers really relevant? Also, Those seem quite long...

The lack of a legal motor number is more disturbing.
If the motor number pad has been altered you may have issues.

I'd venture that if you want to put it back on the road you will need a numbered frame.
And it may not get titled as a HD....

I don't have pics right now of engine. (It is at home I am at work)
I know it is a 1000cc later model engine.

Where the right side vin should be is ground off and restamped with the "1964 xlch"

My main concern is the 775 and 774 prefix differences from the primary and belly numbers. Also would any of the numbers in the belly or primary match the vin numbers that would have been on the engine?

I have a numbered frame that is 1976. Going through title work process so they will want to inspect the engine number which it doesn't have.

The 1964 left case doesn't have a starter bulge above the clutch, all 1000cc engines do.

IIRC the NATB book shows where the VIN is on 1964.
Possible: auction title cleans everything up.

I, in no way, think this is a 1964 motor. That is simply what someone else stamped on it.

I believe you.

I believe you. I was only asking for the pics to see what I could pick out in the way of "tells" on your motor.

Have a careful read thru this link:

http://sportsterpedia.com/lib/exe/fe...nkcase_ids.pdf

Pure speculation on my part:
  • if you can believe the info presented, it would appear your cases were created Sept 4, 1974 (for the '75 model year).... got shelved for whatever reason then came back to life in Sept 10, 1975 (for the '76 model year)
  • OR (and probably a more likely scenario)
  • were incorrectly stamped on Sept 4, 1975 (with a 1974 date) and were re-stamped 6 days later with the correct Sept 10, 1975 date (for the '76 model year)

No. Not as far as I know anyway.

I wasn't suggesting that you were deceived, only that the error is VERY visible and easily detected by DMV, ATB, etc.
