Some just run drag motors on the street in the rpm they were built to run at. Not ever giving a crap about what goes on at 25-3000.

Drag pipes are the problem, the solution is NOT to add more problems to the exhaust.
Sticking things inside a Drag pipe is like trying to fart around a cork.

Guys who insist on using Drag pipes do not care about performance.
I'm currently running 40 inch long 2 inch drag pipes with full baffles inserted. Have not put bike on dyno because it's not broken in yet. Seat of the pants performance is good. Why am I running the worst pipes for the street? I'll tell you why, they don't make 2 into 1 pipes for Ironheads anymore. I've phoned several manufacturers and they tell me there's no market for them. Guess what? Everybody sells drag pipes.

as far as the cones not fitting in an ironhead exhaust.i bought a set for an evo and turned .040 off the o.d. and they were a nice tight fit in the pipe up against the exhaust spigot.after i got my XLR heads back from mrmom9r i was blowing the pipes off with the big valves and port work.he told me to lose the cones..i did.

"Guess what? Everybody sells drag pipes."

Doesn't make it right or the only choice, and you are pissing into the wind.

It's the same reason many of the re-pops of OEM parts are available in Chrome only.
You can lead a horse to water,....
Tradition (even when it is wrong), ego, and wet dreams trumps making correct choices on a daily basis.
Then the bean counters come along and look at sales figures and decide that because 2:1 pipes are not selling near as much as Drag pipes they will no longer have them made.
So in effect you are causing the problem that you are complaining about.
Don't buy drag pipes unless you are using them as a donor to mash up a decent exhaust.
There are brand new header pipes available if you look for them.

I took an EVO pipe and grafted on Ironhead spigots now I have a nice Supertrap for an Ironhead.

There are 2:1 mufflers sold that will fit drag pipes, if all you have is a hammer and a hack saw to work with.

Ryder Rick I alone have only purchased 1 set of Ironhead Sportster drag pipes in the last 40 years. Hardly an impact on market research and bean counters. The last Sportster I owned was in 1975.

The only thing I found wrong with this post was the first sentence. "No expert?" I'd say you're close. A very good understanding of a complex system. Great post.

Another problem with HD pipes is packaging, trying to fit something that actually works in a limited space.

My '71 iron head is nowhere close to a 'drag motor'. It's a 900 cc bored .030" over to clean up the cylinders. PB cams and a good ol' Bendix on a cast iron intake manifold.
My pipes, each less than 16" long, were made with the board tracker look in mind.
I figured they'd be loud so I bought a set of 8" universal baffles and reshaped them into a curve them so they'd slide up into the pipes.
Everybody (me included) is surprised at just how quiet they are. The video is inside my storage container so they're even quieter out in the open with no metal walls to reflect the sound back at you.

Jones: your situation is different you built a certain stye of bike and are happy with that outcome.

You are not crying about poor idle and low speed performance.
You understand the consequences of what you built, and if you don't like it you will change it.
