Default Cough and sputter resolved

I finished this basket case about 3 years ago and it's always had a very intermittent cough and sputter. With the timing & adjustments triple checked and all new ignition components and a new carburetor I just assumed it was part of an Ironhead.
I remember the timing advance unit was completely seized when I got the project. I soaked it , put new springs on it and had it working. I figured it would suffice.
This Winter while installing new points I decided to inspect that old advance unit. It was completely worn out. The bushings egg shaped and very sloppy. I installed a new Vulcan advance unit last weekend and took the bike for a ride. Wow what a difference!
If you are having a cough and sputter issue don't overlook the advance unit.

Vulcan engineering makes their fly weights out of steel, unlike all the other aftermarket weights available that are sintered (powdered junk packed/baked into a mold). Another piece of good advice for the advance unit is to keep some spare springs in your tool bag. Just in case.
