Default 74 XLH1000 Project

Bought this off a buddy of mine. He never got it running and after he picked up a 96 Sportster, this went to the back corner. After a lot of pestering and irritation, she's in my yard now. Got a bucket of parts to go with it. I have a final picture of what its going to look like in my head, but I have to keep telling myself "Just get it running first". My first motorcycle that wasn't a dirt bike and I'm ultra stoked that I might have it figured out.

Actually. Looks like it should not take much to get that running. Clean the carb. Check wiring for burns or breaks or loosey goosey connections. Ric gave good advice on checking primary and setting ignition. Maybe check wheel bearings while wheel is raised by rotating wheel and see how the brakes look and sound. Mostly hand checks. I would take nothing apart other than the primary cover like Ric mentioned.

Take me about 2 days to go over that bike before hitting the start button.

Here's a little bit of an update on how things are going. As a refresher, here is what the jugs looked like up close.

Found out that the front jug was scored pretty good and had a decent crack starting on the cylinder wall. The bike came with a spare set of cylinders that needed to be bored out due to very light score lines in the rear cylinder but still very usable. The machine shop told me they were already 20 over, so 30 over here we come. In the meantime, she got stripped down and fitted with 30 over Wiseco pistons and Hastings rings. Yes, the pistons were matched to the cylinders.

Cylinders back from the shop. Bonus that they were already black.

I was initially worried about my choice of color on the heads and how it would match the chrome, but I have a picture of the bike that is black and copper pinstripe and I'm very satisfied with how things are looking.

And we came into the 21st century with a new electronic ignition.

As of now, have some wiring to finish up and should be able to hear this lil piggy snort again by this weekend. It couldn't have been done without this forum. I've done little posting but lots of reading thats given me the courage to get into something I've never done before with tearing down an engine and rebuilding. That I did it myself is going to make it that much sweeter once its running.
