Default Cylinder Bore scoring marks

I just took the cylinders off my 96 sporty 1200 for a top end rebuild. I realized that my jugs are actually Drag Specialties because of the machined "A" symbol on the corner. With inspection of the bore. I'll still measure it with a telescoping gauge and a micrometer, but I don't think i'll hone it since I can still see the honing marks on the cylinder.

But I do notice "scoring" like lines down the length of the cylinder. (reference photo). The lines in the bore are smooth. no nicks or burrs. When it scores down like that, what does that mean?

Means something got into the cylinder & got between the rings & the wall. If it wasn't using oil & had good compression, it might be okay. Why did you think it needed a top end rebuild? I'm no machinist, just curious & some of the guys on this forum are very knowledgeable & may be able to give you solid advice with more info from you.

My bike had good compression, but I was burning oil in my rear cylinder. Wasn’t sure if it was worn rings or valve seal. So I decided I’d change both and do a top end rebuild. Also picked up this bike a few months ago, so this is allowing me to be more familiar with my bike.

I’m inexperience with bore knowledge, so some guidance would be appreciated.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be getting a 1275 kit from Hammer. Not the cheap way out, but you've already got it apart & it probly needs more than just a gasket set to get it back on the road.
