Default over drive

any hot rodders with thm 400 automatic or perhaps a motor home carriage. the 400 was one of the toughest built by gm but also the most parasitic. how about a 20% over drive.

TH400's
I have 1 in my truck and 1 in my shop.
What was so parasitic about them?

TH350's
I have 2 of those also.

Back in the day, I raced with mostly 350's but used 400's also.
I don't remember a tranny ever being the reason the tranny burnt up though... all me.

I wish I could afford overdrive for my 400.
I just don't want to pony up 3 grand to save a dollar in gas.

Bustert, the new version of the 400 is the 4L80E and You guessed it.. it has overdrive.
But it requires a controller if you use it as stand alone.

You are correct it has one of the worst parasitic losses of all trans due to its internal configuration, but it is a tough unit.
When I was dragging I used one for quite a while but then after doing research I started using a modded 350 and my 60' times dropped substantially. later I went to a powerglide

My mistake,
The 700R4 ruined me from wanting to know any more about newer transmissions.
Showing my age again.

the 700r was a spin off of the 200 and can be run without a computer with a little rewire as it still used a modulator. the 60 and 80 need a controller.
the 700 if tricked a little bit was a good tranny, i used one in a tow vehicle.
mr. hippy, i have an over drive if you are interested, for cheap. do you remember DOUG NASH? yep a racer. he designed this 20% od unit which i put in my 88 one ton as a tow vehicle. it is old school helical gear, the newer ones are sun gear. BTW: if you watch the junkyards, sometimes you can run across one as it was an option for corvette, used as a gear splitter.
do not for get the power glides, we ran one in a chevelle with tricked 327, low gear shifted out at 90mph. funny story but smoked a state trooper one night.

thanks, hippy
folkie basically said no worries there, all i wanted to do was free up some space on the server.
will send you a pm later on, when i said cheap, i was not kidding, hate to send it to a salvage yard.
how cheap, well i sold a complete rod/bearing set for 20 bucks, covered shipping. even have a stub drive shaft if you have a dual driveshaft under your truck.

That's interesting.
I toned down to a crate 350 long block a few years ago.
(still got my baby butts and Holley's)
Running a SAE 60'-70s TH 400. Truck came with a TH 350.
(had to buy an extended yoke for the shorter tranny with stock single driveshaft).

I'll post a pic tomorrow of the underside.
I don't know the hookup for the OD.

These people make an aftermarket unit based on the old British Laycock OD and it can be adapted to many transmissions

https://www.gearvendors.com/index.html

(FWIW have the original in my Triumph TR6 car and it works well)
