Default Exxon/Mobil synthetic base oil formulations for motor and gear oil

Maybe some info to compare base oil formulations for Motor oil and gear oils Maybe not

EXXOn/Mobil Synthetic Lubricant Formulation guide
(Can be downloaded here: https://go.exxonmobilchemical.com/l/...9-07-03/93nn4s )

Motor oils use SAE J300 viscosity ranges
Gear oils use SAE J306 viscosity ranges

************************
Engine oils
Even the 10W-60 starts with a SAE J300 20 viscosity base oil (5.6 - <9.3 cSt @100C)

The higher viscosity oils use a higher percentage of Viscosity modifier to increase the viscosity to the 40 / 50 / 60 viscosity SAE J300 ranges

Automotive 10w-60 API SN
Base Oil
SpectraSyn™ 8 71.3% KV @100°C cSt 8.0 PAO API Group IV
Esterex™ NP343 2% KV @100°C cSt 4.3 ester API Group V

Additives
Infineum DI 12.0% (Detergents, Anti Wear, defoamants)
Infineum VM 14.4% (Viscosity Modifier)
Infineum ppd 0.3% (Pour Point Despressent)

Viscosity @100°C, cSt 22.8
TBN, mg KOH/g 8.4
HTHS @150°C, mPa-s 5.1

**********************
Automotive 5w-50 API SN
Base Oil
SpectraSyn™ 6 42.6% KV @100°C cSt 5.8 PAO API Group IV
SpectraSyn™ 8 31.5% KV @100°C cSt 8.0 PAO API Group IV
Esterex™ NP343 2% KV @100°C cSt 4.3 ester API Group V

Additives
Infineum DI 12.0%
Infineum VM 11.6%
Infineum ppd 0.3%

Viscosity @100°C, cSt 17.3
TBN, mg KOH/g 8.4
HTHS @150°C, mPa-s 4.2

**************************************************
5W-40 fully synthetic four stroke small engine oil
(meets API SL, JASO T903 MA2)
Base Oil
SpectraSyn™ 6 82.0% KV @100°C cSt 5.8 PAO API Group IV

Additives
Infineum DI 8.0%
Infineum VM 10.0%

Viscosity @100°C, cSt 14.6
HTHS @150°C, mPa-s 3.7

**************************
Gear oils

SAE J306 90 gear oil viscosity range 13.5 - <18.5
(Overlaps motor oil SAE J300 40 / 50 viscosity ranges)

SAE J306 140 gear oil viscosity range 24 - <32.5
(Starts in the motor oil SAE J300 60 viscosity range)

******
75w-90
Base Oil
SpectraSyn™ 6 40.0% KV @100°C cSt 5.8 PAO API Group IV
SpectraSyn™ 100 32.5% KV @100°C cSt 100 PAO API Group IV
Synesstic™ 5 20% KV @100°C cSt 4.7 AN API Group V

Additive package* 7.5%

Viscosity @100°C, cSt 15.8 (thinner than a xW-50 motor oil)

*******
75W-140
Base Oil
SpectraSyn™ 6 19.0% KV @100°C cSt 5.8 PAO API Group IV
SpectraSyn™ 100 53.5% KV @100°C cSt 100 PAO API Group IV
Esterex™ A32 20.0% KV @100°C cSt 2.8 ester API Group V

Additive package* 7.5%

Viscosity @100°C, cSt 24.5 (Thicker than a xW-60 motor oil)

************************************************** *****************
The formulations shown get the benefits of AN /Ester base oils using just 2% of the formulation.

(A note on using Group V base oils (AN or esters with PAO Group IV)
In addition, the use of Synesstic™ AN base stocks or Esterex™
esters as co-base stocks can offer the following benefits:
• seal swell and additive solubility
• improved lubricity
• improved cleanliness
• improved thermal and oxidative stability

(from the Small Engine oils section)
Combined with an appropriate additive package, synthetic esters
and/or AN, in combination with PAO fluids, may lead to
improvements in lubricity and offer excellent antiwear performance
in all areas, particularly with respect to high-lift camshafts and
other heavily loaded valve-train components.

Default Some info on the additives-

Additives listed are from Infineum
https://www.infineum.com/en-gb/about/
We are a Specialty Chemicals Company with powerful research and development capabilities around innovative chemistry. A joint venture between Shell and ExxonMobil,
we are one of the world leaders in the formulation, manufacturing and marketing of petroleum additives for lubricants and fuels with worldwide production and research facilities.

Additive Components
https://www.infineuminsight.com/medi...components.pdf

Additive packages for engine-oil formulations are carefully
balanced combinations of individual components, with the treat
rates determined by the demands of the lube specification.
Generally, viscosity modifiers are also required and the treat rates
are determined by the viscosity targets and base stock properties.

Typical additive types used in engine oil formulations are:
• rust Inhibitors
• oxidation inhibitors
• antiwear additives
• defoamants
• corrosion Inhibitors
• detergent and dispersants
• metal passivators
• pour point depressants
• viscosity modifiers
• friction modifiers

Gear oil
additive requirements
Finished gear lubricants are typically composed of high-quality
base stocks with between 5 and 10% additive, depending on
desired performance characteristics. These additives include:
• rust inhibitor
• oxidation inhibitor
• antiwear*
• defoamants
• corrosion passivator
• extreme pressure friction modifier*
• dispersant polymer*

*Not always required; application dependent

Common Additives between Gear and Engine
• rust inhibitor
• oxidation inhibitor
• antiwear
• defoamants
