Biggest problems I’ve had were a bad ignition module (seems common for 1999 model year) and leaky rocker box gasket (rear cylinder head leaked until I replaced the paper thin gasket with a super thick after market one)

I’m not a fan of how much a PITA changing the battery is, but they fixed that in 2004

Edit: Oh yeah, the right handlebar control wire routing really sucks, not enough room tends to pinch

My theory is, if it has tits or tires it's gonna give you trouble and cost you money.

I have not had any problems with my mostly stock '06 1200L, though I have only put about 10K miles on it. It had 3800 when I bought it used, and looked like new. It is my first Sportster, and I came here mostly because I had questions, not really problems. I do have to say, I have gotten great answers to every question I have asked. Great forum.

I have an 81 Ironhead, I have owned it since 2000 & it's been a complete money pit, there is very little of the original parts of the bike that where on it that I have not replaced.

It is now a brand new bike & I still spend more time fixing it than riding it. If I new how crap these are I would never had bought it. I have got so much money in it I can't sell it as the loss would be astronomical.

On the odd occasion when it is working it's great, a real pleasure to ride, unfortunately that doesn't happen to often. I take it out & wonder what will go wrong on this ride.

If anyone was to ask me about getting one I'd advise them to stay well clear.

my 99s rigid evo has been fine... I wouldn't trade it even up for anything NEW !!! I will however do a HAMMER 1250 or 1275 on it at some point...

Smile Problems?

1997 hugger 883,had 5 years still no problems,31000 miles, ooops, broke left turn signal switch and replaced it last week my clubfisted fault. 1998 1200S,18000 miles, bought it yesterday:what a hoot! Gas light problem easily solved, get a carburated bike and swap to reserve when it sputters. DUH !
