What is the original issue that led to you testing the units? Repeatable noisy tappet?
The pushrod seals were leaking and while replacing them I pulled out the lifters. They were fine except the front exhaust, which was sticking in its cylinder. I cleaned it really well but it's still sticky and I don't want to run the motor till I get a good lifter in there.

There are no set screws in the oil passages - doesn't appear it's ever been running solids. These blocks don't have the oil fitting and the short hose going to the jugs (Harley tried that for a few years after 1981 I think). I can see oil coming through the passages on both cylinders so I guess the tappet block gaskets are installed correctly.

I don't want second guess the FSM. I would like to understand the reasoning better though.
I didn't really doubt Petersen but it's good to see the same test in the FSM. Why these 2 lifters failed it ... I think I can rule out user error. Maybe I'll pull a good one from the motor and see how it does with this "air test." If it fails then I know I'm doing something wrong I guess.

That sounds like a good direction.

Final verdict - I got sold 2 bad lifters...

The working lifters I pulled from the bike all passed the "air test" without issue. One was a little less tight than the other 2 - didn't pop up quite as high - but all 3 held for a 10-count and popped back up more than enough to show the seal (check ball, whatever it is exactly) is working.

The 2 bad ones I bought - 1 Sifton and 1 Drag Specialties - they're not by any chance the same company are they?
