Default 900 sportster big valve heads

Hi, I’m building a 1965 sporty and have found that my heads have 1.93” inlets and 1.75” exhaust valves. What I need to know is can I run this head, and would do I need special pistons (didn’t get any with the basket case bike)? I heard that 1970 pistons with larger inlet valves had bigger cut outs for the valves? Anyone know? Cheers!

Welcome to the forums!

You posted this in the "Forum FAQ/How to" Section at the top of the forums.
Folkie will likely be along later and move it to the Iron Head engine Forum.

If you look down the forum page you will see "SPORTSTER MOTORCYCLE FORUM"
The third "section" will be:
"Sportster Motorcycle Era Specific and Model Specific "
The next "section" under that will be "Ironhead Sportster Motorcycle Talk (1957-1985) "

I'm not experienced with Iron Head heads but the forums also have a "SportsterPedia" with information gathered from all the members here over the years.

This link will take to info on the Iron Head Heads- Head Sets with Year Changes

The "SportsterPedia" can be found at the top left of the forums page under Main Menu

Default 900 pistons

The 900 stock pistons were dome type and did not have valve relief pockets.Since you have a basket case make sure you have 3 inch barrels and heads to make a full set.

Thanks, yes I have the right barrels. But the exhaust valves are 1.75 so I guess they’ve been enlarged. Don’t seem to have these on anything but the XR, and these aren’t XR heads, they don’t have the enlarged spark plug bosses. Might have been something someone did back in the day to go’s faster. But I only have P cams and larger valves wouldn’t do much for it. Just wondering whether I can use these heads or need to find some stock ones?

Yes you can use the heads. That was a common mod back in the day. I have large valves in my 70 no issues.P cams require no headwork.

You will have to check the valve to piston clearance. That said here's the issue. With each successive valve job the seats get cut deeper and deeper. At some point the seats must be replaced. Some shops that can't replace seats will install larger valves to achieve the proper stem height. It appears your heads need seats replaced.
