Gasket leaks could still be from the breather valves (umbrellas inside the plastic housing) being too hard.
A good gasket can get sucked in and out until it breaks wind.
Could be a bad install too though.

How is your oil pressure?
Can you see oil returning in the tank well?

Yep, they should have been replaced.
Got it.. i did replace all seals and gaskets, including the valve seals while i was in there.

And i got the rocker cover off, bad install. My fault there. Easy enough to fix.

While the oil could have been getting past the rings, it didn't seem to be loading up the spark plugs. They were ashed over, severely.
I've been concentrating on noise.
With it being that loud, timing and rings will still work but the noise could be something that'll put him down soon.
Hell it could be timing that's causing the noise.....
Motor doesn't sound horrible on idle though which I'd expect if'n so.
These things need to be addressed though.

So... how's your oil pressure???????
Oil returning to the tank?
I ask since that is something you might need to know.
Just because it doesn't appear that the top end was slapping doesn't mean you may not have low oil to the bearings.
I don't like the noise that loud in that area.
So I was wanting to rule out the bottom end worries.
I suppose it could be something in the primary but it sounds important to my ears.
Anybody else?

Did you replace the breathers/umbrellas? They're 15 yrs old and probably hardened. If the breathers aren't working correctly you get oil leaks and seepage, frequently from the rocker boxes.

Breathers were both replaced for brand new OEM's.

How do i confirm oil pressure? Obviously my light isnt on, and it appears the oil is circulating, but im not sure how to 100% verify that. Any suggestions?

In terms of timing, i referred to my service manual and it says theres nothing to do aside from the two sensors (map and crank). Those have not been replaced.

Also, for years i have always had a good amount of oil in the air cleaner. I usually have had to clean out the air cleaner frequently.

Lastly, I haven't pulled the primary cover off. I did two years ago when i replaced the clutch pack and throw out bearing. But I did change my primary at the beginning of this process and shined a flashlight in the case.. nothing unusual and hardly any shavings on the plug.

You get more pressure as the RPMs go up and less as they go down.
I hardly get anything more than a drop here and there of oil in the A/C.
And that's due to high rpms.
If you are getting constant oil in the A/C, somethings amiss with the breathers or the pressure.
An oil pump with a weak scavenge side will allow too much oil to stay in the crankcase resulting in more oil mist out the A/C.
Not saying you have a problem with that, but there is more to it than just the oil light coming on or not.

If that motor was mine it'd be pulled back apart to physically examine the primary, wheels and gearcase including bearings and bushings.
There is no way for us to determine where that noise is coming from over the internet.
If you could get a stick on the different areas of the bottom end AND give it throttle to make the noise, you'll get a better idea of where the noise is.
I'm wondering if it's in the cam case.
But I can't see inside from here.
But I promise you, just because you haven't fooled with any of these areas in years doesn't mean there couldn't be a problem in these areas.

Get you something thick like this and probe different areas.
Noise will vibrate thru the wood plus the wood helps to feel areas that are tapping.
Nudge the other end firmly to your ear.

In the cam case, I'd pull the cover, rocker boxes come off first, and visually check the cam gears/ oil pump gears.
Then I'd clean the pushrods with steel wool and roll them on a thick plate of glass to check for warpage.
Then I'd pull the cams and check the bushings in the case and also the cover.
Then I'd pull the oil pump apart and check the clearances on the gerotors and condition of the housing insides.
Then I'd pull the primary cover and see if there was any wear or damaged parts in there.
Then I'd put the trans in neutral, pull the plugs and spin the motor over from the sprocket bolt/nut slowly and feel for bumps or noise while turning.
Then I'd go back to the cam case and check pinion shaft runout.

The above will answer several questions I have.
But once you got the carbon off the top end, all we know is it's put back together and it still knocks.
So apparently what you've done so far has not addressed the real problem.

Thank you for all your help HippySmack. I replaced the breathers so we'll see if oil keeps coming in the a/c.
I'll try the stick and stethoscope method to try to pin point the noise. Likely in the off season its another full teardown with the cams and primary off.
I would pull the cam case now but i think you can't do it without the head off.

Run an external breather that vents to atmosphere instead of into the intake. No more oil in the air cleaner and intake.

Running the oil level in the oil tank at the "low" mark reduces the amount of oil coming out of the breather(s) and will probably reduce your oil consumption.

That oil you were seeing in your air cleaner goes right back into the intake and carbons up your intake valve and combustion chambers. It explains the carbon buildup we see in your pics.
