I just went thru the same thing. I was taught to replace gears in sets, so I was going to get 2nd & 3rd gears but noticed my 1st gear set was a Taiwan Ted or some other crap, so I threw in a set of 1st also. Then I started thinking about that big 4th gear jump with my 22/48 gearing so I figured I might as well change it now. So, I ended up ordering a W first gear set & a C 4th gear set & got all gears for a little over $600. Replaced the bearings & 1 shifter fork. I think I have about 650 in it now.

As of this past weekend it's together and all I have to say about the NEW gear ratio is HD should have done this a long time ago

Is there anyone that sells a "set" of end shims for this? Ordering one at a time is a P.I.T.A.

Good luck on yours!

Waz-

I did the same thing this winter, C box with a wide first (22/49).
Seems like a whole 'nother motorcycle. Makes for a much better ride on the back roads.

As far as the mainshaft R/S thrust washers, search for "DS-194183". Several places sell them, 15 pc. set from .030" to .125" for ~$40.

Thanks everyone for the info and leads on parts! I did drop the trans assembly off Thursday at a local shop that specializes in old Harley's to get his evaluation on what I have going on. I will update when I get a diagnose back!

Thanks again!

what's the name of the shop, and where are they located - if they truly are good, we have a "recommended indy shop list" in the sticky section, maybe they could be added if they're not already in there...

R&J Cycle 123 Motor Sport Ln, Ford City, PA 16226

I was recommended to Ross through a series of people so this will be my first experience and I will report back if it is a good one. I believe it will be judging from his "40 years" of Harley experience and his general great demeanor on the phone and in person when I dropped the trans off. Excited to hear my results so I can enjoy riding my Ironhead this summer rather than just wrenching on it

Enjoy the wrenching also, though, when it becomes necessary rather than looking at it like a chore. There's no such thing as a maintenance free ironhead!

Are you gonna set the main shaft and counter shaft end play, can't figure out how he's gonna do it without your motor.

Yeah we are starting with figuring out what the trans needs and going from there. Either I will set the end play or take the rest of the bike to him to finish the set up depending on price.

Thanks!
