I bought a 1985 XLH1000 in 1987, I'd just sold my Kawasaki KZ900 and didn't feel like I'd gone backwards power wise, as the Kawa had lots of BHP but the Sporty handled and stopped well, and had tons of torque. Sadly I had to sell it to buy a car, but I've always wanted another one.

In 2015 I bought a mint 1994 XLH1200 that had only done 3500 miles, and the owner had tarted it up with lots of chrome and crap, and what surprised me the most was how gutless it felt? I ditched all the chrome crap, installed a Mikuni HSR42 and Bassani Road Rage and an 18 inch rear wheel, and now it feels much better.

I've just bought a 1974 XLH1000, it looks pretty stock but it's a non-runner due to a bad starter motor. I'm collecting the bike one day this week (I just got out of hospital so couldn't pick it up right away) so I'm really looking forwards to getting it going and seeing how it compares to my current XLH1200 and memories of my old XLH1000.

Due to the awful exchange rate I've just spent a small fortune on a set of 2015 heads for my XLH1200 and a Hammer performance 1275 kit and 560 cams etc, so it'll be smoking hot shortly, I must see what's available for my old XLH1000 to help it along a little......... ;D

performance, hands down the evo
as far as handling, the iron to me has a better cg and i can run the curves deeper with less effort.
wheelies, evo at command, iron with finesse or body language.
breaking traction at 70 mph, iron cannot do it, evo bad especially on wet road.

I have a 1977 XLH, my Wife has a 2004 XLH 1200 Custom, so I can give a very good comparison between the two. Cornering, Ironhead wins. Exhaust sound, Ironhead wins. 60 mph roll-on, tied. Wheelies . . . who really gives a shit. Break traction . . . other than burnout to impress somebody, tied. Feel, the sound, vibrations, the looks, the pride, no competition - IRONHEAD.

60 mph roll on, bring it here, evo will smoke it. even my tweaked 74ch will not beat my 01 sport.
agreed with wheelies
breaking traction is a big deal, but then again tires make that diff skewed. the iron is predictable even in slick conditions.
running two up, evo wins and i have been all over on both sometimes making 3k mile runs. as far as comfort level, not much diff but i give the evo a slight adv only because it is geared for cruise outside the vib range. the iron comes in a tad over the 3k rpm and settles out around 4k which is 80 mph. the evo starts after 4k rpm (camming) @ 90 mph.
the iron tops at 133mph, the evo, do not know, the speedo ends at 5k rpm and 120 mph. iron redline is 7.5k and the evo 7.5k but originally was 5.4k rpm at 120 mph.
evo is less squirrley at high speeds. but i have diff suspensions.
