* Except the round slide Mikunis, notorious for sticking WFO when used on H-D motors.

I believe it's a federal regulation since around 1980. Same as the deleting of the headlight on/off switches. I've seen bikes with an without them and some models (Yamaha XT's) switched in the late 1990's.

At the bottom of the throttle tube, were you find the screw that is like a ''cruise control'' a little slider (#21 on diagram part 56396) act as stopper that limit the travel. If you lost that little slider, your throttle is free to spin all around. That the main cause of fraying cable when you remove the ''idler cable''.

Interesting, the little "slider" IS missing, but I still have it. Perhaps that's been the issue all along in eliminating the idle cable. I never used it, and when I was lubing the cables years ago, it dropped out and I just put it in a film can. I figured since the little adjuster knob had broke off years ago, no need for the slider to go back.
That might be why my throttle over rotated forward when I remove the idle cable. Thank you in advance if this is the only issue! I've got a brand new Barnett throttle cable I've wanted to use for a few years now, hoping to get rid of the idle cable.

Get another cable, or pair of cables from a reliable manufacturer and try again, but don't cut a new cable up just because you don't THINK it will fit.

I neglected to say that I have 16" ape hangers. I'm using 130mm cables but that should not affect the fitment. The cables are matched lengths with the idle cable having the spring. Carb is a stock CV.

Your bike came with both a throttle and an idle cable. If you have two cables coming out of your throttle grip, then it's still there. If you only have one, someone deleted it.
