The trough and small hole collect oil for the rear chain oiler. If the oiler is plugged off (as most people do) then that hole does nothing, and oil accumulates in that area to no effect whatsoever.

This is exactly what I was wondering, my dad definitely plugged that off and I assumed a bunch of oil would just be sitting in that trough especially with the engine tilted now.

I wish I had stuff like that to sell, but I'm only 19 so I've just been setting aside a small amount every paycheck to go towards the bike and over time it seems to have been enough to keep it running and fix any issues that pop up

God bless you young man. That is my kind of talk. Here's hoping that old money pit does not outrun your paycheck.

When the engine's running that trough will always be full of oil. It makes no difference if the engine is level or tilted up or down, or if the chain oiler is used or not.
Crankcase oil gets pushed into the cam chest and fills that trough.
If the chain oiler is used the rate at which the trough gets filled is faster than the rate of oil going out to the chain.
If it wasn't you'd be out of oil in a short time.
And the oil in the cam chest will make it to the return screen whether the engine is tilted or level.

I suppose I hadn't thought about it always needing to be full anyways, but that does make sense. At this point it seems like I shouldn't have any concerns as long as the oil pump is doing what it should and nothing is blocked that shouldn't be.

God bless you too sir, you've helped me out on this and other previous posts as well. I sure hope it stays that way, as long as I keep it religiously maintained I'm guessing I should be good for awhile. Thankfully my dad took good care of it before I got it, even had clean oil in it after it sat for 15 years.

I'm only 81. Together we add up to 100. Cool, I say
Ya gotta have a healthy lifestyle - I am the same weight as I was when I was 19, ~140 lbs. I am a bit shorter because you cannot stop the spine for shrinking

There's a coincidence ! I was 10 stone from about 16 to just after I got married.
I'm at 175 now but that's all muscle.
Healthy lifestyle means nothing if you get git by a giant meteor.
