Default Eating Battery

85 XLH 1000 daily rider, left for short sunset ride one night week ago got 3 miles from home sneezes twice and shuts off cold, no power anywhere. Stepdaughter fetches us home. Battery stone dead, put it on the charger, hook up test battery go looking for shorts - nothing. Next morning battery still on charger hasn't taken a charge, take it to Car Quest to test.- defective battery 2 yrs old so no biggy buy another. Install new battery starts and runs perfect, alternator output 14.4V. Use it all week every day for errands and short 5+- rides. Friday nite headed out for another sunset ride, stop at gas station for fillup, wont start, Push it home 3 blocks. Battery stone dead again. No signs of shorts, put in test battery, starts right up, charge voltage 14.4. Mention this to a buddy at pool tournament last night and he says "Oh yeah, had same thing with his sons Road Glide. Would eat a battery every 20 - 30 miles - was the stator" . Any body have this happen before?

Intermittent charging problem or short - maybe happens only once it gets good and warmed up. Ride around with a voltmeter connected and keep an eye on it. Then, unplug the charging system and see if result is the same, to narrow that down. (It will run on surprisingly low voltage without a charging system, but probably won't start.)

Could also be a second bad battery, even though it's new.

Sounds like the 1st battery simply died from an internal short...

The stator is connected ONLY to the regulator - it would be unlikely for the stator to actually kill the battery - although, if the stator is not outputting a proper voltage thru the regulator, the battery may run down because it is not getting recharged - but normally, that battery would still recharge on a proper charger...

The regulator can develop an internal short that can drain the battery - as suggested, putting a volt meter on the system will let you monitor if the charging system is working all the time or intermittently failing...

Be sure to go over all the grounds - both battery cables should be physically tested by pulling on the end connectors, both at the battery & at the bike, to be sure the cable connections are solid and not corroded or broken strands...

Broken strands - yes - I have even seen cables that look good on the outside, but then you cut open the insulation to find all the strands inside are broken and since there's corrosion too then they don't make contact. Right in the middle of the wire, not necessarily near the connections. Goes for large and small wires alike. Really surprising the first time you discover it.

Got to looking at things today. Again new battery wouldn't charge, to CarQuest battery tested bad. Ready to leave with replacement guy says hold on we gonna check the other batteries on the shelf. They were bad as well (2). Bad batch? Saga will continue......

I don't know what type of battery you use. But an already filled AGM could be on a shelf for a long time. Therefore I prefer a Yuasa AGM which you have to fill and seal yourself. The day you fill it, will be the first day in his lifespan so to say.

Let's hope that's the case, if not test, or let someone test your regulator/rectifier.

For under 20 dollars you can buy/install a Digital Voltmeter .I connected mine into a head light wire.It will always let you know volts if something is a miss ,head back to port.With the voltmeter I found my battery imploded from to much DC. After battery failed of course it output was very low. I now am installing a combo Regultor/Rectifier in hope of solving my issue. Id say if its not a ground thats not clean/tight/well made.I also read of some unstable regulators sold/installed new.I hope this is of some help.
