Default Wednesday 8th August 2018: Roman Road To Ramsbury

I'm planning a ride along the Rοman road from Venta Of The Belgae (Winchester) to Cunetio (Mildenhall), and on to Rаmsbury in Wіltshire.

I'm planning to go on this ride on Wednesday 8th August.

This Rοman road was referenced by Ivan Margary (the authority on Rοman roads in Britain) as number 43. It is shown on this map:

We tend to charecterize Roman roads as a succession of long straight sections, but this road has a significant deviation from its otherwise straight (ish) cοurse. This deviation went around the deep and steep sided Hippenscombe valley, around a semicircle of about 1 mile radius, before resuming the previous alignment about 2¾ miles further on. For the Southern part of the deviation (South and East of Scot's Poor), the ground was built up as necessary for the new road, and is called Chute Causeway. The Northern part of the deviation used an existing Ancient.British trackway: the Inkpen (North Hampshire) Ridgeway.

Key to map routes:
▬▬: Route of the Rοman road that will be ridden on the ride (nearly all metalled roads).
.
• • •: Route of the Rοman road that cannot be ridden (restricted byway, bridleway, footpath, no right of way, or disappeared under ploughed fields, housing, etc).
.
▬▬: Other roads that will be ridden along on the ride.
The route to Rаmsbury will be along the A272 to Winchester, and on to Hill Farm crossroads. So far the Rοman road is a secondary main road, but then it follows minor country.roads. Initially I will have to follow diversions through Barton Stacey, Wherwell, and a section of the A303 (around Harewood Forest), with only short sections of the Rοman road that can be folllowed, but through Andover much of the route can still be ridden. The route will go past the site of the Rοman road station of Leucomagus, at East Anton.
An aside about the way stations on Roman roads. There were stopping places ('mansio') every 12 miles or so; the forerunner of the wayside inn. There were also 'mutatio' (changes) every 4 miles, where mounted messengers could change horses; 4 miles being the distance that a horse could reliably be galloped hard. By galloping hard and changing horses every 4 miles, and changing riders as necessary, the messengers could maintain an average speed of 20 mph. In this way, an urgent message could be relayed from York to London, a distance of 200 miles that would take the normal mounted traveller over a week, in only about 10 hours! I find that astonishing, and very impressive.
Then there is a long section of the original route that can be followed, up to Conholt, around the Chute Causeway, through Wilton, and on to Crofton (on the Kennet And Avon canal). Then there is a diversion, through Great Bedwyn, before going along private roads through Savernake Forest. The route here isn't quite on the line of the Rοman road, but it's pretty close.

Then it's down to Axford and along the River Kennet to Rаmsbury, for lunch at The Bell At Ramsbury.

The return route will be along the River Kennet to Hungerford, across Hungerford Common and up to Inkpen Hill.
There is a track along the top of Inkpen Hill: the Inkpen (North Hampshire) Ridgeway (it can be seen in a couple of the photos below). This is in fact a further part of the same ancient road which was used by the Romans to form the Northern part of the deviation on the Rοman road (North and East of Scot's Poor).
Then Burghclere and Kingsclere, and on the B3051, up White Hill to Overton, and to Micheldever Station and Micheldever, and across Northington Down to Alresford. From Alresford, through Ropley Dean and on the 'top' road to Petersfield, then the A272 home.

172 miles round trip

If anyone wants to come along, let me know.

The Rοman road just North of Andover, between Wildhern and Hatherden; here called Hungerford Lane:

I love these postings, what a gift to the forum! How cool to check out old Roman roads, still serviceable today. Our "wealthy" community here in Carlsbad has the crappiest roads around. My city gets so very much tax revenue from Legoland, car dealerships, and an airport, yet huge potholes everywhere. All your roads look so well maintained. It's almost dangerous riding in Carlsbad lately.

Thanks for sharing your adventures.

John

My pics must be misleading, because some of our roads are pretty bad too. I forget how many potholes they say we have, which we (apparently) can't afford to repair properly.

Like the views from Combe Gibbet. Is there still a Gibbet there? We have one over Cambridgeshire.

Yes, there is:

It's been used only once: in 1676 for gibbeting the bodies of George Broomham and Dorothy Newman, for which it was built. Broomham and Newman were hanged for murdering Broomham's wife Martha, and their son Robert.

Sounds like my grandmother back in the 60's. "Got to go get me chicken." She always had to have a chicken in the fridge. Even as she got more and more senile, she still made her famous bone soup. Great, but the bones would kill ya. She went for a chicken once and was gone almost a week. We finally found her on a bus bench in Pawtucket.

Looking forward to your pictures by the way.
