You can do that, but you might get turn signal open codes tho. If you're set on doing it, I suggest using heat shrink over the ends of the wires instead of tape.

I'm not sure if a 2002 model was already that smart in giving that codes(?). Well, if in doubt, just remove the bulbs first and see what happens.

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on Turn Signals:

If you do that, you'll likely get no flash - to address the current expectation of the TSM, you'll need to add load resistors so the TSM flashes correctly...

Remove the bulbs and see what you get...

I removed mine years ago, taped and stuck wires under the tank. No problems with the rear blinkers or flashers.

In some states, if the bike came from the factory with turn signals, it may be illegal to not have them. Might want to check before you remove them.

I removed the bulbs & hit the switch - rear lights lit & stayed lit.
I guess load resistors & heat shrink tube are in my future.

no mc inspection in NJ so I don't think anyone's gonna notice or care that they are gone

Here in ND, we don't have MC or Automobile safety inspections. If you get pulled over for anything, speeding, noise, etc. the cops will give you an equipment or safety ticket on top of your speeding ticket and require you to get a state inspection from the Highway Patrol. If you don't pass the inspection, they'll take your license plate and return it once you pass.
A lot of times they'll just give a verbal warning so they don't have too much paper work.
