Default Touring Tach Install

Hello all;
I have an 2009 XL1200C, and my objective is to install a Tachometer from a 2008 HD Touring Bike (Electra Glide?).

I know I have to connect the Serial Data Bus, Ignition and Ground. But do I need the Battery, Accessory wires? It looks like when key is in run position, the Ignition and Battery wires are both connected to the Red wire from the Battery.

I propose getting these signals from the Data Link Connector. This way I do not have to splice any stock wiring. Do you-all think this will work? Thanks for reading. Burt

Hi,
I think i used the accessory connection so Tacho comes on when ignition switched on.
I used the ground wire on the Black Wiring running to headlight instruments. Maybe could just place Ground straight onto metal of frame?
There is a connection for Tacho signal in the wiring connections within the speedo. I think there is a write up of this somewhere on the forum however i have no time to look at the moment. I have a cheap aftermarket tach on my 2008 Sportster.
I have to go to work right now but i can get back to you later if you need.

Bikeaholic: Thank you for the reply. I can get Ignition (Battery when key in Run), Serial Data and Ground from the Data Link Connector. I do not want to cut and splice any wires. I am hoping I do not need any other connections to make the Tach work. Don't care if backlight works since do not plan on riding at night. Hope others will chime in about the Battery and Accessory connections. Take care and ride safe. Burt

Hi,
Those three connections are all you need but i am unsure if that is where it should be scourced. I have looked at my manual and Data Link Connector does have the ignition, ground and serial data, as you have said.
It does make me wonder how gathering the RPM signal for tach from the one Serial Data connection will work. When i hook up my power vison from the Data Link, all Multiple Data travels from this one connection. But i am no expert.
There is a Factory built Tacho in-put plug in Speedometer harness connector in rear of Speedometer ( no splice). I hope it all works out. Ride Safe.

Bikeaholic: Again, thank you for the reply. I guess I am now down to the point where I have to do some active testing to confirm the proper operation of this tach.

My choice of the Data Link connector is because it does not require molesting the stock wiring harness. I have the proper mating connectors for both the Data Link and the Tachometer connectors. Will be an interesting experiment. Take care and ride safe.

It should operate the tachometer part correctly - the ecm communicates the rpm value to the tach...

You might want to simply tie all three (tach) power wires together - that way, they will at least be powered with the key on... Unpowered, you may be missing some lights on there...

I certainly don't think you can hurt anything by trying it... as long as you get the right connections...

IXL2Relax: Thank you for the comments. I just found out that the Speedo and Tach connectors are keyed differently. Of course I bought the Speedo connector since the Tach connector is not available at a reasonable price. Anyway, just need to grind off the key and will be good to go. I had given thought to tying pins 1, 5 and 6 together so I think I will do that per your suggestion. Have to figure out how to route the new cable put the connectors on and machine out the new tach mounting bracket. Should be fun. Take care and ride safe. Burt
