79 has no transfer valve so blow by should not be getting into the primary.

Generally a bad sprocket seal will provide more clues. The trans would be making oil and the motor loosing oil.
But the owner may not be paying attention because the motor is smoking(using oil).
A motor that is smoking may likely have problems that cause other issues especially leaks, obvious mechanical issues like smoke would normally be addressed first.

I would recheck the valve adjustment. I'm thinking it's your rear cylinder doing the oil in the tail pipe and I think it is leaking down when bike is sitting not running and when you start riding and muffler gets hot it starts puffing smoke.If it was leaking enough oil to be in tail pipe it would be fouling the plug bad.Just some ideas.
