Default 1982 front master cylinder sight glass replacement

So I got a rebuild kit for the front master cylinder and it came with a replacement sight glass and rubber grommet. The old one came out fairly easily by pushing the sight glass into the reservoir. Replacement is much more difficult. Tried inserting the grommet and sight glass as one unit (the way the old one came out) but it looks practically impossible. Tried putting the grommet in first and then slipping the sight glass into that. Still looks practically impossible, but I’ve gotten it close this way, but not fully seated. Pushing from the pointy end is painful, and using rubber covered handle pliers it still got marred on the point a little bit.

Is there some trick for inserting this thing?!?

Have you tried soaking the grommet in hot water to make it more flexible?
I'd like to see some pics of it.
