Still juggling visitors (between tradies for renovations), so I still haven't been out with my camera. I did however catch a quick phone pano from my front verandah of a nice sunset last night. Took the pano, raced inside to grab the camera and tripod, but by the time I got the right lens on and the tripod up, the colour had faded. At least I got the phone pic

...edit... I forgot! I escaped to a waterfall for some nature therapy just before Christmas:

I love waterfall pics! I love taking them too! I haven't taken any since the honeymoon, though.

I think waterfalls have the most rejuvenating effect on me of all of nature's offerings. Hope you get out to one again soon Fred!

Thank you! And... it depends

This one was a 2sec exposure. I usually keep it somewhere between 1/3 of a second and three seconds; though sometimes I'll shorten as much as 1/8th or extend it out to minutes if there are other factors impacting.

If I don't have ND filters with me, then it'll be a shorter exposure, dictated by how much much light there is. In these instances I'll choose a smaller aperture, usually f/16, and then see how long I can expose for without turning the highlights in the water to pure white which loses detail and texture.

Though most often I use filters which gives me flexibility as to the length of the exposure. So then I look for factors in my frame such as plants, water swirls, water spray, clouds or stars to help decide length of exposure. Most times it depends on how much vegetation is in the photo as often the force of the water will have nearby plants moving, in which case 1/3 sec is usually long enough to smooth the water without capturing too much blur in the plants.

If there are water swirls happening in the foreground, it sometimes takes longer: 2 to 10 seconds to record the motion of the water to get the full whirlpool effect.

If there's lots of spray I'll often keep it short, so the lens doesn't cloud over or get droplets on it. And in more open waterfalls I'll also take into consideration cloud motion to add drama to the sky (sometimes that might be a minute or two and require heavy ND filters). Or if it's a night sky then the exposure will be for the moon or stars and may still require some light painting with a torch.

But if in doubt, see if you can aim for half a second without over-exposing.
