Im an extreme longhaired greasball and I stop for all bikes to offer assistance. However i gave up waving along time ago. Reason being I commute daily, same time of day, same route, neighborhoods ect, 50 mies each way. I often see the same riders of all sorts. I have several brands of bikes and when I realized I would get a wave from brand X when I was on brand X. The "brotherhood' is a matter of conveniance and attitude anymore. i personnaly dont give a crap that your riding to the bar or dealer in the oncoming lane. Im heading the other way. Call me old and grumpy, dont really care. Its just not the same anymore. Like i said i will not pass on distressed rider though no matter what brand.
Small caveat: I will give the one, two , three finger when off road on a trail t alert oncoming riders there is 1.2, 3 more riders in my group coming along behind me. that still has a meaning.

I think regional differences come into play. Though not riding-specific, when I moved from west of Baltimore to northwest of Atlanta I had some culture shock. Around here, it's not too unusual for strangers at the store etc. to just start talking to you like they know you already. Pretty soon they are telling all about Junior and his wife, the family, Joe down at the barbershop and his cancer treatment etc. Back in MD, do that and people will think you're a weirdo and walk away (or worse).

Out my way in the exurbs even the car drivers wave sometimes.

i moved from Jersey to South Carolina for a bit. In Carolina, @ 50mph drivers in oncoming cars would wave like you were long lost friends. There it wasnt selective, everyone did it.

That's like comparing small towns with big cities.... in the city you are just a stranger and nobody gives a shit about you... in a small town you are 'more" of a person, and everyone waves or talks to you about anything and everything.

In a small town they also have their nose firmly in your business and talk about you to everyone, about anything and everything.

True True, fuken true that!!!.... I am glad I moved 10 clicks out and up on to the mountain... I don't even go to do shopping, bars, etc. in my own home town (10,000 population) and/or the surrounding villages (3-5 K population)... I just jump on the road and go to the nearest bigger towns (30 & 50 K population) when I feel like going out... in the bigger towns I am not hassled with questions like where have you been all these months, etc, etc.

Do you wave like the queen, hand turning or like Andrew, finger bending?
