Exclamation just bought a 79 ironhead right i hope but i got a nasty clunk

when i start the bike it sounds like something is hitting the outside of the primary cas from inside. it corolates to the rpms doesnt really matter what gear your in. checked the chain tension seemed fine. any ideas would be helpfull thanks .

The truth is your just going to have to pull the primary cover off and see what's going on.
In my experience something that SOUNDS like something hitting the inside of the primary case IS something hitting the primary case.

Have you check the primary,in several spots ?..I check mine when bike is on jack,plugs out ,in 4th...you can also do by rolling bike a little at a time..

i have already taken the primary off nothing out of the ordinary really . tension was fine gonna pull the transmission tonight and take a look sound like a good idea?

did you check the shoe..back off all the tension..see if theres something lose there...its only a good idea to dissamble when your certin...get some picture if you have that resorce

The '79 didn't come with a compensator sprocket assembly.
Of course, ii guess someone could have gone to the trouble and installed one??
