By some, maybe, but not by everyone.

Not necessarily; when ABS was added (in the UK), for example, it was at no extra cost.

I'm not arguing against a better (more capable) system, but I'm not at all surprised by HD's choice, considering the factors I've mentioned...

Ken, I humbly agree, and just F.Y.I. I tried two big twin systems in my “Orange”, a 2006”R”, and probably got 2-3 years and 20-30,000 miles out of each. This was at the urging of my “Indy”. Parts costs were just over $150.00 for stator and regulator, so it was reasonable. Bothe set ups failed, same way, with melt down where the harnesses were soldered together just after the hold down plate in the primary. Could be part of the heat issue mentioned in Karl’s article from Cycle Electric. With my voltmeter in place on Black Beauty,( what a comfort tracking my systems output), resting my bike sits at 13.1-13.2 ignition engagement drops me to 12.7-12.8 and starter will dip it down to 11.4-11.5 but almost instantly rises back up to13+. Not uncommon for me to see 14.5 at under 1500 r.p.m.’s. I’m exceptionally happy with my Cycle Electric three phase set ups.

exactly how mine failed
i attribute it to the break down of the goop they used to seal it. once this happened, the eddy currents take over. copper and aluminum are bad mojo so over time failure is almost guaranteed.
