Never heard of a motor blowing up because of a leaky ball check valve or weak spring.

Howdy and Welcome.

Greeting from Massachusetts!

You did it the hard way, but you know every bit of the motorcycle and it's all yours. Congratulations, nice going!

All of us had to start from some where. I just got a earlier start is all.

Major motor failure I have seen relating to: but neither related to primary AND Tranny abuse by the owner.

Intake leaks at freeway speeds for long distance. Exhaust leaks not fixed.
No carb support. Owner has no clue on how to reassemble A motorcycle and
it flys apart aftwards < Think cam gear timing, oil pump passages blocked with silicone, stuff of that sort>.

Things you may never have a clue on why things flew apart. I've seen these motors < older ones > take some horrendous re-assembly and get one to a destination to fix things right. Hundreds of miles away. Pretty sure InsaneShane owns the breakage trophy on this site. Good thing he is wrench also.

Take it slow. Fix stuff right when ya can. Adapt and overcome if ya can't.
Some of the best fixes are not conventional sometimes.

Above shot shows a abandoned hardtail and the customer don't want spend money.
300 bucks later it would hold fresh oil < new hoses and worm clamps where needed > . Start. Run. Idle. Shift. Barely stop. Barely turn a corner. Slow air leakage. But. Ridable home on the freeway for 300 bucks.

In the engine I replaced:
new pistons and rings, cylinders reboring up from .040 to .050
new connecting rods and flywheel thrust washers
new main bearings, conversion to a new type of bearing, two separate taper bearings and needle bearing with inner race
lapping valves and little porting of head
new gaskets and seals
painting cylinders and heads, engine case glass bead blasting
repair generator, replaced starter solenoid

I didn't have time to polish cam and clutch covers
