One of the reasons I buy HD gaskets is because they are made for how the engine is designed, not to cover a collective of bad decisions. If the HD gasket does not hold, then there problems that need to be addressed.

I can say this, good tech makes a great running bike, bad tech makes a bike that is always being worked on to cure the problems good tech handles upfront.
I do my own work on bikes, but not all my bikes are stock. I do keep it as close to spec in areas as mating surfaces and torque spec because that is the bread and butter of the engine, If I do an upgrade I look to see what all is effected, such as a compression increase and the cylinder studs, when building an engine we need to look at everything. and bread and butter is how each surface meets and what it takes to keep it there.

this has been a good discussion and every bodies input has had merit, it is why this forum is so well respected.

oh, so you just go to your nearest dealership for your ironhead gaskets, do you? on the odd chance they have anything in stock for an ironhead, i'll bet it's genuine james, not genuine HD

Occasionally, if you are prepared with and can give the parts counter guy the part number, they sometimes have stuff, but only sometimes. And my dealer never has gaskets in stock that I need. I usually turn to eBay.

One should never approach a HD dealership parts counter, looking for IronHead parts, without a parts catalog in hand, turned to the correct page, and with the correct line highlighted

I do not own a Iron Head so I would not be aware of this, But your sarcasm is noted.

Edit: HD does not support older sportsters, I had not thought of that,
