I started in the time of the List.
My first year was 2001.

Team Graybeards was founded (3 guys drinking beer after a day on the Salt) in 2008.
You know the scene in World's Fastest Indian when Burt is polishing his sidewalls?
Same place, one floor up.

Me, Opa, and Bill were the original Team. Since then we have found a few like-minded souls that earned their Team patch.

Bill passed just over a month ago, so this year is dedicated to him.
He'll always be listed as my crew chief, anyway.

I thought you were trying to find out about when and where it was

I was a member of the SCTA for years back in the 80s and 90s. My partner and myself raced gas altered coupe and had a blast both on the dirt and on the salt
held a few records for a few years during that time.
used to race with the Eliminators when they were out of Corona, we ran a early rx7 and a comaro. I also built a few engines for a team running a lakester.
It was always fun, I would build the cars and my partner would drive. His last run he was well into his 70s and still he was doing a great job, Cancer ended his racing career, but he still wanted to run till the day he died. I remember him telling stories of running in the early days in a car built from a P38 wingtank. He was truely one of the originators on the dirt at El Mirage.

I would love to go to Bonneville and watch the runs again. It has been years. 2 of my proudest moments in my life were having built a V8 that did the dirty 2 and watching that lakester do 224 on the salt. Sadly when Ted died I gave up the sport and sold everything. To this day I want to build a Sportster and ride it myself. In all the time I was doing it, I always was the pitboss, never did I do a pass. I guess I need to now.

Thanks for the post, I will go this year to Utah to see if any of my friends are still competing. It will be fun.

I see the engine breaks are 1000 to 1300, so a sporty would be best run either 1000cc and a 1200, 1250 or 1275 would be giving up a lot of ccs. Does amyone make a 999 or 1299 kit? actually a very oversquare 999cc kit would be a nice start. even if that means a new flywheel assembly.

and is anyone making gearing you would need? IF I could get high enough gearing I could devise push start bumpers to get running. However who would be making gearing high enough to make it worth punching an 883 to 999 and still getting record speed?

Leave yourself some room; the inspector's bore gauge does not forgive.
Honing for fresh rings could put you in the next size class...
1000cc pushrod records are everywhere between 125 and 213.
Pick your class and build to the rules.
(I think the XB9 had a shorter stroke. Bore out some 883 jugs and fit custom pistons....Hmmm)

I run 23/35 and don't need a push.
