The ultimate OIL thread!
Yeah, I think the forum needs an ultimate (single) thread. Archived. And locked. There is easily a year's worth of reading on this forum about oil. GOOD GRIEF what a twisted, opinionated, uncorroborated, aggravating topic that's a dead horse that's been hauled out and repeatedly beaten that it's unrecognizable!
There seem to be a few thoughtful, scientifically-based responses sprinkled among thousands of (irritatingly redundant) random opinions. Boy, howdy, are meaningful inputs hard to find!
Maybe a summary would be good that presents (1) reasons to use dino oil, and (2) reasons to use synthetic. Then the reader can digest and decide. No unjustified opinions. Just facts (preferably substantiated with sources).
I'd like to put one together, but I'd end up with sumpthin that'd provoke other people to point out the bunch of things I didn't say (or didn't say right). I ain't a nerd and don't write or talk so good. I know my limitations. I'm stupid. Handsome, witty, and humble though I may be, I'm also admittedly ignorant. There MUST be a techie, geek, or nerd who's smarter than I am who can write good who'd LOVE to dig into this.
Who's the resident science nerd in the XL forum? How can we twist his arm into putting together a good Oil Summary (that can be archived and locked) for the benefit of future generations? Or is there already such a thing, and I just didn't see it? (I *am* pretty ignorant, as you may recall...)
Just askin'

With the vegans going more and more popular you've forgot Castor Seed Oil option.
Hundreds of pages about oil all over the net.

Why start a thread about a topic that you admit is a twisted, opinionated, uncorroborated, aggravating topic that's a dead horse that's been hauled out and repeatedly beaten so that it's unrecognizable?

I reckon you're right, Onadraw. It'd be pointless and STILL contentious, I guess. (sigh) So I looked on the shelves in my barn to see what I already had (saving me a trip to town). I found 4 quarts of Castrol GTX 20x50 dino oil. Must've bought it a year or two ago for my Samurai but didn't get around to using it. Samurai doesn't get driven much (no A/C in a miserable hot/humid climate). So I put the Castrol GTX in my 2007 EFI Sporty 883C. I found some "High Mileage" Castrol 10w40 that I'll put in my Samurai. It's been on the shelf for a few years (bought it for my '60 Ranchero, but sold the car last year). Might as well use up what's on my shelf, I reckon. So Sporty gets the Zook oil, and Zook gets the Rancho oil since Rancho got sold.
How's THAT for a lazy man's way to choose oil? Verrrrry scientific!
:-)

Ah, the pragmatic, empirical approach. Who said you were dumb?
