Default Speedometer and Mileage

On a 1996, 1200 Sportster, where is the vehicle mileage stored? In the Speedo or a computer somewhere else? If a speedo gets replace how is the mileage transferred over to the new speedo?

Thanks

I expect it's the same as on the early rubbermounts; ie: the mileage is stored in the speedo. When getting a new speedo you have to say what the mileage should be set to, and H-D supply the speedo with that mileage already set on it.

Folkie's right - It's stored in the Speedo - Until 2004 (or 98-03 Sport) there was no engine or system control module that communicated with the speedo - Only the VSS, directly to the speedo. There was only the cancel signal line from the speedo to the turn signal canceller.

2004 started communications over the Serial Data Bus (SDB)
2014 started communications over the CANbus

And even though there was on the carby rubbermounts, the mileage was still stored in the speedo, not the ICM.
