" Properly tightened fasteners don't just fall off the motor the moment you quit watching them."

HD always used quality fasteners which makes a big difference regarding staying tight and holding. English fasteners would stretch and require more tightening until they break and vibrate off. I've had early Honda tools and fasteners that would turn a full revolution before they would loosen the bolt. We always used KR barrel caps and they would never require re tightening. Buy a quality torque wrench and use it correctly. Having a pre-flight inspection that involves running around re tightening everything is asking for a calamity. There is significant growth and contraction in these iron parts and you can lose your mind trying to stay on top of a non-existent problem.

OVER TIGHTENING BOLTS FIXES NOTHING!!!!!!
And breaks a lot more.

Get your junk clean and flat first.
And clean the silicone out of the bottm of the screw holes, it does not compress well.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

The 65 ft-lbs in the older manuals is a typo.

The 79-85 service manual lists:
-8-16 ft-lbs for the OE acorn nuts
-8-16 ft-lbs for the rocker arm shaft screw

The 1981 factory engine assembly drawing (16055-81/16057-81) shows:
-8-16 ft-lbs for the acorn nut
-70-100 in-lbs for the rocker arm shaft screw (5.8-8.3 ft-lbs)

Hey forqueue,

Thanks for the tip, I used the loctite trick to get the stud seated in the cap and then I tightened them by hand into the rocker boxes.
