Default TC88A makes me smile until WOT

Lurker first time posting. I've read so much on this topic that I can't remember any of it.

After lots of reading here I came to the realization that the cheapest way to increase this bikes power to weight ratio was to loose 50lbs. The easiest way was to throw money at it.

Just finished Putting together
2006 XL1200C
Shortblock Charlie's Scotsman Heads 10:1
Stock valves and springs
adj pushrods
stock lifters
Andrews N4 grind cams
Stock Flat top pistons
new choke cable (been fighting broken compression collar for years)
TC88A factory set for speedo (supposedly)
Supertrapp 2to1 Supermeg 12 disks
SE air cleaner
stock carb jetted at dealer for air cleaner and 50 state leagal slip ons a long time ago

I am not a mechanic, but grasp most concept if they are explained to me enough times with small words and lots of beer and I didn't do the actual wrenching. Guy that did the work does it on the side, but he did go to harley school 25 years ago. (not a slam, just that he learned in an era of not just pushing touch screen buttons)
Took it for a test ride at 5,5,6,0
felt like hit rev limiter pretty low (now sure it was not rev limiter)
raised it, no difference
5,6,7,0
got worse
re read instructions remembered 88 lower compression tried again at 5,4,6,0:5,3,6,0:5,2,6,0
A little better each time, but only works at 80% throttle. WOT feels like slopply version of rev limiter. is it missing or is that what you refer to as THROTTLE FARTS? With advance at 2 or 3 and 80% throttle is pulls like I hoped it would, but if you give it a little too much it goes backwards.

My uneducated guess is carb is on the edge of lean with these now pipes and WOT leans it even more.

Should we put stock ignition module back on and work on jetting before playing with the TC88A some more? I am not opposed loading custom maps once I get around to ordering the cable, just wondering next step for now.
Plus how does the initial timing affect the advance? any recomendations on setting it with the dials for now?

If the module is stock TC88A the initial switch moves the whole curve,the slope switch changes the curves.
Your '06 uses a VSS setting of 1634
Supertrapp might want more disks or an open cap
Check the jets,maybe a 45 pilot and 180 main,get us number off the needle if possible.
Check the float level,vacuum pet cock ? check the hose from the carb to same
adjustable push rods ? make sure the valves aint too tight.

I'm definitely going with a lean condition. Is it a constant problem or worse at certain rpms? If you give it full throttle and pull the choke out does it go away? Without a tach 6000rpm will be where your ear tells you that typical Harley sound needs to shift, 7000 is screaming. So you're definitely breaking up due to a fueling issue. Pull the plugs and take a picture for us. Plugs will tell you 95% of your tuning problems

so then we went up
45/185 1/2/6/7
45/190 1/2/6/7
48/190 1/2/6/7
48/190 stock ignition


185 seemed a little better
190 about same
48 same
stock acceleration little different problem same

2nd gear hold 60mph, 80% throttle speeds up pretty good till cuts out. back off throttle half second then give 80% instant cuts out
almost any speed the wide open cuts out quickly

picking up 195 tomorrow, would have to order 200
what are the odds that the stock petcock cant keep up? if you accelerate too quickly until it cuts out you can back off for a few seconds and then push through that same rpm lvl that it cut out at

? stock rev limit feeling vs tc88a. tc88a proclaims that rev limit fires both simultaneous resulting in smooth limit or something like that
the cut out I am feeling is kind of like stock rev limit but not really. I don't know what tc88a rev limit feels like. is it comparable or different?

after the 195 tomorrow he is going to shim the needle. I will see if I can get the numbers off of it

Long wait due to waiting for parts and then a very early freeze. 63 degrees yesterday so it was riding weather again for a day.
catching up since last post: lots of things no difference. added thunderslide. swapped carbs for same style. 8 disks.

ordered jets 200, 205, 210, 220
removed thunderslide, put in 205. it made a difference. still flutters at wot but only after you reach a higher rpm. 60 in 2nd flutters as soon as you give it more gas. 40 in 5th wot accelerates until you are at a higher rpm and then it flutters. so now the issue is that you can only go as fast as ~80% throttle will let you. Put in 220 and no change from 205.

approximately: 2nd 66, 3rd 73, 4th 79, 5th 83 that's it. giving it any more gas in those gears at those speeds results in fluttering.
starting is almost instant even when cold. lots of power at the lower throttle levels. no backfire in carb or exhaust.

Needle does not look like it is made of brass.

It has been suggested by a 3rd party to put on a mikuni flatside HSR42.
I understand the difference between the vac slide and cable slide, but the claims of 20% horsepower increase over stock cv with a similar size main jet (comes with 155 and 165) is hard to understand.
