Though it's entirely possible to buy what you want and that other folks like it as well.

I like it when people come up to me an say "I used to own a Sportster and I miss it." I tell them I understand completely.

Yep, gets noticed a lot...exhaust note, all the mods. Probably the paint is what first gets them looking, if it's not running.

I'm kinda liking that sissy bar, that's super cool. I'd almost want one like it, but not quite enough to deal with the hardtail struts.

+1. You left out, "and sounds like a motorcycle."

In addition to my post above, I was riding the same route a few days ago (the day after Christmas!) and I saw two completely different style Harley's with completely different style riding gear: a super-old guy with his long white moustache blowing in the wind on his chopper with ape hangers and an older couple in matching riding gear on a full-dress, shiny touring Harley with fairing and all the bits. The old chopper-guy waved at me as he zoomed by me in hair-pin turns while flying uphill and then waved at me again as he was dismounting at a scenic overlook. The older and fashionable couple were getting off their bike at a restaurant in a tiny mountain resort village and both waved at me as I putted past them in first gear.
All riders smiled and waved. We were doing the same thing.,we were RIDING. We didn't care who saw us, we were just enjoying the experience that only a dog can enjoy when he sticks his head out of the car window. What a great day!

By the way, my base Sporty XL883 Standard looks bone-stock with no bling at all. The mods are internal.

I get more notice now as not many bikes out and about in the winter months in Michigan. Got to be extra careful cause the cages aren’t expecting motorcycles on the road this time of year.

My R9T gets more comments. The Sportster gets mixed reactions. Some like it, some go the "it's only a Sportster" route...

Mine gets noticed every time I'm out. Most of the BT guys in town have all checked it out at one time or another with nothing but good to say.
But I sure noticed a lot of heads turning Xmas Day including 2 cops in town who waved out there windows as I let my pipes sound off loud & proud.

Default '03 XR livery

My '03 has aftermarket XR tank and seat, handlebars

Mostly young peoples stop and say "that yours?" because I'm old...

then "I like it"

No, I don't think people who ride motorcycles have changed much at all.
