Under normal driving conditions, I use the brakes very little.
Age gives us this....I removed rear brakes on many swingarm mounted non floating systems. 70's and 80's shocks were a pile of enertia. Wheel hop was unexceptable.
Engine braking and gear power selection provided better handling then.

So what a great topic. Congrats for the starting post. I have a 83 and it really likes just a little blip when shifting and when trying to rush the shift, I say if you do not shift it with a little blip it it is not as easy to shift and increased foot effort, obviously the clutch releases as it is not new. lol...

Ref: Engine braking

Just learned the term "Backing it in." Kind of an extreme form of engine braking during cornering. Use the clutch keep the back end from coming around.

Depends on the bike and circumstances and whether using the clutch or not. On the dirt bikes and race bikes with light flywheels almost never use clutch or blip shifting up or down. On Sporty with heavier flywheel use a variety of techniques depending upon how aggressively I am accelerating or decelerating. The fastest up and downshifts between third and fifth will always be clutchless and blipless. You won’t feel a thing once you get the hang of things. Lower gears and especially transitioning through neutral with the large gap a feather of the clutch helps. Same thing when moving slowly through town. On my Evo Dyna with a heavier still flywheel I pretty much always use the clutch for up and downshifts and will rev match including double clutching up and down.
I ride for fun and love going through the gears in a variety of manners depending upon the mood, speed, quickness and conditions ;-)

I blip most of the time when downshifting but only to try to match the rev's. Even then, I don't do it any more than necessary. If I don't have to, I don't. It seems I need to do it most when "thrashing the mountain twisties" and then I'm downshifting to accelerate when going and decelerate when going down.
Learning to do it just came natural when I was a kid back in the early 60's on small 2-stroke and 4-stroke metric bikes. I was "dirt biking" before it was a "thing". There was a lot of road construction in my area back then and all of the kids with bikes were spinning, sliding and jumping the roads long before they were paved. That was when the US was building the new Interstate System that President Eisenhower started after returning from Europe when he discovered the Autobahn during WWII.
I was at the right place at the right time for these roads, for good rock & roll with the "British Invasion" and for Woodstock. I reluctantly grew older but I'm still fighting growing up.

Yes, Learned it riding dirtbikes as a kid, keep on doing it now. Sounds awesome, less wear on the Clutch and far more control when you get caught in the rain.

As a kid, I could even shift up or down without using the clutch by matching the revs. Since I don't trust my reflexes as much these days, I'm afraid of taking a chance on hurting my clutch.
