thanks for the update needspeed.just checked the 900 fsm,washer to the outside.normally i check the parts book first for parts only info,this time i was misled by the factory.

Hopefully I won't add any confusion to this thread. The 59-69 service manual confirms verbally that the washer goes toward the cover.

A post from Ironmick states that the paint mark on the gear goes to the outside.

If true, the paint mark and the washer go toward the cover. The paint mark on the 2 gears I have is on the same side as the larger ID (5/16) of the shaft.

Conclusion: The paint mark, washer and end of the gear shaft that has the larger hole all go toward the cover.

Four pages of this, and no one has mentioned checking the shaft size. On high mileage motors,you will find the shaft & bushings with wear. Eastern MC Parts offer a shaft & bushing kit to effect this repair. That will go some ways to making your cam chest (a little) quieter.
