[Hippysmack, thought I should add that the Hammer Pinion Gear Locking Tool does work on pinion gears before 1991. They weren't sure].

Yeah, the last I read on it was that it was basically a supply and demand vs cost thing for 4-speeds.

The jigs were built for the 5 speed gear since that is where the demand was.

They may have made some since I thought I read on their site that the 4-speed lock was no longer available, but you'd have to verify that with them. edit:
Never mind, that was pinion gears for 88-90 4-speeds.

In order to build the 4 speed pinion gear lock, they would have to re-design or add on to the 5 speed jigs.

Read the link I gave to the Sportsterpedia. I've included all the build pics of the tool.
There is a lot of engineering that went into the jigs alone.
Engineering means $$$$$$ passed onto the customer.
So, without adequate demand, the tool isn't feasible to build and stock for the company.

I've seen a mod for a Jims tool, adding a 1/4" in length on the mounting holes?, on here somewhere.
I just haven't gotten to it yet.

So, your saying it does or doesn't work on 4 speeds?
Gear tooth count the same?
Bolt holes on the case the same?

I noticed they are only selling the 91-99 and 2000 up versions on their site.
I remember reading at one point they weren't sure about retrofitting it but I never read that had been answered.

The bronze oil pump gear fits 88 and up.

Can't trust my eyes but this is Phillober's 02 cam chest.

How close is the first hole to the pinion gear on 4-speeds as opposed to the first hole in the pic below?
I thought that hole was just a little further to the right on them.

I thought the pinion gear tooth count was different also.... could be wrong.

5 speed mounting holes for the tool (the 2 on the right of the pinion gear).

Hippysmack, all I am saying is that the tool does fit the 88-90pinion gear which Hammer didn't know. The holes are the easy part if they need re-aligning. I have yet to fit the bronze worm drive upgrade (it has been on my winter list for the last two years!).

I don't know what is different about the 88-90 pinions from the later ones. They are as rare as rocking horse poo now. Basically you don't want to damage it getting the nut off so I wanted a locking tool. Subsequently, I was pleased to add a NOS pinion gear to my spares stock.

I didn't know they were that rare.
I know I've been having a hard time finding info for them on the forum.
Good to know the tool will fit your pinion gear.

I'm just chasing down questions I've had while reading.

Most certainly. Only made for three-years and not since about 1994. I have no idea what's different about them.
Maybe you should warn people to be careful if they work on them. Break it and you may have a serious problem.

Errata: sorry I meant the 88-90 Pinion gear. 86-87 were splined. 91- are readily available.
