TIA,

Look at the ignition coil. Dual Fire fires both plugs at the same time, thus 1 plug get a wasted spark. There are 2 wires on it. Single Fire fires each dedicated plug one then the other. There will be 3 wires on it.

Although there is some confusing at times, related to the application of the terms, generally, Single-Fire refers to the COIL FIRING a single spark plug at a time, rather than the older style ignition system where the COIL FIRED both spark plugs at the same time.

The Single-Fire COIL has two trigger terminals (plus the power terminal) which makes a total of 3 terminals. The Dual-Fire COIL has only two terminals because it uses a single trigger to fire both spark plugs together.

And that's where the confusion comes in... Sometimes people have referred to the number of trigger signals (wrongly) rather than the whether one or two plugs are fired at the same time (which is the right reference for single-fire or dual-fire).

(cross post - but correct)

You may have read my post about the issue I had on Sunday when the rear cylinder only has started to pop & backfire when I was out riding.

I have remembered that I have a Crane Cams HN ignition fitted, unsure if it's single or dual, it's been a long time since I looked at it as it has worked perfectly since I fitted it some 17 year's ago.

I can't get to look at the bike till the weekend & am just gathering info to help me when I do.

If the ignition module is faulty would it only effect one cylinder & run the other one with no problem?

Thanks again,

Andy.

If it's a single fire system and you swap the plug leads it will no longer start or run.

On a dual fire system it makes no difference which lead goes to which plug.

I do believe the bike is dual fire, it has a single coil with the two HT output leads & two connections either side of the coil.

I can't look into it till the weekend, hopefully I can give some good news or a bit more information after then.

Thanks again,

Andy.
