Hey All, it's been a minute.
Great to be back in it.
I bought my 01 1200c back and it's a lot rough, Dyna2000i smoked.
I have to install the oem module and coil and I can't find my fm and I kind of but not really remember how to do it.
Specifically I need the STATIC TIMING procedure for the HD module.

Here is the SportsterPedia section on timing:

IGNITION TIMING - All Models 1986 Thru 2003


If you have a Hammer Performance 1250 kit this might also apply: Ignition Timing

If your bike has a timing plate or nose cone module, you have the option of either backing down the timing or replacing the ignition with a module that will give the proper curve (preferred).

If you're using the factory ignition module, start with the timing set to the factory correct position per the service manual procedures.
Then put a mark on the timing plate (or nose cone module) that extends onto the inside of the nose cone.
Rotate the plate or module counter clockwise .090" as measured at the perimeter of the plate.
If you have a marked timing plate, this will be one and a half hash marks.

Remember that the OEM nosecone ignition modules were very susceptible to heat failure - Do you know if the module is definitely good?


From Shanneba's Sportsterpedia link:

Static TDC Timing for the 1998-2003 Models (Not-S)

Important: Be sure you are on the compression stroke of the front cylinder when setting the Static Timing. When you rotate the engine (as follows) be sure you feel the pressure in the front cylinder spark plug hole is building up as you rotate toward the TDC mark. Turn the engine over as often as necessary to guarantee you are on the compression stroke of the front cylinder.

The Nosecone Ignition unit (98-03 not-S) can be statically timed (without the engine running) using the built-in LED. The procedure is to manually rotate the engine (bike on lift, 5th gear, rotate rear tire to rotate engine) to position the engine to TDC (front cylinder compression stroke) using the timing hole to look for & center the vertical line. Then, turn the ICM/Cam Sensor Plate slightly clockwise & counterclockwise to find the exact spot where the light switches between on & off - Lock down the plate.29) In this way, the ignition module is synchronized to the engine (TDC) so that it can effectively calculate the proper time to fire the spark plug BEFORE TDC.

Thank you for replying, I will be mindful of the overheat you mentioned. Me using the oem module/CS and coil is very temporary.

Ok with is going on with my ignition...
Putting a 01factory module and coil in my 96 custom try to start it and it literally fires one time. Cycle the power and again one spark.
This is a dual fire icm so it sends spark to both plugs.
I can't find my FM damnit!!
From memory, I think the module has a pink wire (trigger), a white/black (switched B+), a black wire (module ground), a violet wire (voes), a green wire (tach).
I have no voes on it, I grounded the violet and black, folded back the green wire as I don't use a tach, I have my switched b+ to the module and coil and the pink to the coil.
The red LED (just one on the factory icm) flashes one time and as I said above not again til the key is cycled.

The nosecone module was stock on 1998-2003 Sportsters. Your 1996 model DOES NOT HAVE A BAS (bank angle sensor), but the nosecone module expects to see one. The module expects the LtGREEN/Grey wire to come from the BAS. There is no separate output wire for the Tach on the stock nosecone ignitions modules.

To bypass the BAS function, ground the LtGREEN/Grey wire. That will make the module ignore the BAS function.
