Default Safety Tips - Cager Blinkers

When you see a vehicle in front of you with a turn signal on do not assume that the vehicle is going to turn in that direction. Do Not try to go around the vehicle on the opposite side. Do not become impatient and try to blast past them. As my dear deceased friend used to tell me when I would road rage in NJ "LET THEM GET AWAY". Meaning let them get away from you.

I tried to go around a vehicle that signaled it was turning left and when I was halfway past them they turned right ---- into me...I crashed.

Luckily I have angels watching over me because I only suffered a badly brusied foot and hip...my poor bike suffered some but was able to rider her home with bent bars and pegs!

If I had just let that vehicle turn completely out of my way I would not have been in that accident.

Hope this makes someone else think a little bit.

If you just assume that the cagers around you will do the wrong thing, no matter what they're signalling or looking like they're going to do, you'll be less likely to have a problem. When, on those rare occasions, they actually do the correct thing, it's a pleasant surprise. Makes for a much more relaxed ride. Ultimately, as a rider, we are responsible for our own safety. When you give that responsibility to ANYONE else, even for 2 seconds, you're going to be disappointed.

BKB you're right about that. Hard lesson to learn for someone like me who thought I was a safe rider. More safer now that's for sure. Just something I took for granted.

Even when they blink right and intend to go right, many make those wide turns by starting left, half-way into the oncoming lane, before actually turning right...

The roads are full of idiots - we need to try not being run over by them - or becoming one ourselves...

Riding in the back country, with little or no traffic, is one of the ways I try to avoid the issue... Even there, you need to be 100% aware to avoild animals or limbs or othe debri on the roadway...

Glad you got out safely...
