Default Ignition coil rating ?

Anyone know a simple, reliable way to identify the ignition coil on a Sportster? I’m fairly sure the present one on my flat track bike is 5 ohm Accel, but I want to be sure?

The rating is the resistance measurement of the Primary Coil Windings - the input side of the coil...

Use a multimeter to measure that coil resistenace by using it set on OHMs.

First, touch the two leads together to see what the default reading of the meter produces - It might be something like 0.2 ohms - Keep that number in mind or write it down. If you're using an analog meter, they usually can be zeroed with an adjustment. If your meter has multiple scales, put the meter on the lowest OHMs scale (usually X1).

Then put one lead on each post or pin of the Coil (Primary Side). Whatever that measurement is, subtract what the default reading was. So, if you measure the OHMs across the coil (primary) as 5.5 ohms, then subtract the 0.2 from above and you get 5.3 ohms for the coil winding.

Most times the rated resistance is + or - .5 ohms - so a 3-ohm rated coil (for electronic ignition) might be 2.8 ohms to 3.5 ohms --- and a 5-ohm rated coil (for points) might measure 4.5 ohms to 5.5 ohms...

The most recent coils are below 1-ohm of resistance... Of course, any coil with some shorted windings might end up below 1-ohm...

It is important to match the coil to the ignition system - Too much resistance will lower the effectiveness of the system & too little resistance may cause the coil to overload - The ignition system design will determine what coil rating is required...
