Default oil question

Is it ok to add dino oil to break in oil if the levels are low? Is there really anything special about break in oil compared to dino?

I suppose it depends on what you call "Break In Oil"

It's probably just BS but I am referring to the oil that was in my car when I bought it new. Supposedly the properties are different from regular dino or synthetic oil and is specifically used to beak in the engine until it gets its first oil change.

But I can't see the harm in adding the recommended oil to it. Was just curious.

In this day and age of roller tappets and close tolerences with rings that are lapped before the engine is assembled, variable valve timing and CAFE issues not to mention the emissions equipment problems i really dont believe there is such a thing as break in oil.

Oh sure, several companies make such a thing but its really for race and hot street motors that need high doses of ZDDP or zinc something or other whatever the hell its called

Othewise any SM rated oil in the correct weight per the MFG should be fine.

if its new and the levels are low, seems like time to talk to the dealer.
