Default '74 CH fender removal?

I want to remove the front fender on my stock 1974 XLCH. Do I have to remove the tire also? And how do I disconnect the speedometer cable so that I can get it through the guide on the fender brace?

You wouldn't have to remove the front wheel, but it would make the fender removal easier. When you pull the axle, the drive unit will fall loose from the wheel...no need to uncouple the drive unit and cable. Just remember to put the "hook" of the drive unit into the slot in the wheel when you reinstall.

it will come off as mr. sadsack mentioned. the original bolts are long but will slip through, i replaced with shorter stainless ones. the speedo cable is easy. unscrew the nut on the back of the speedo and then unscrew the metal end going into the drive(by turning the cable housing), make sure it is the cable end and not the drive, you should see the diff in material.
