Default cam lobe clearance for V9's

Finally have some time on my hands so I can start fitting the V9's to my 1983 XLS. I am wondering what would be the minimum clearance for the numbers 2 and 3 cam lobes to the pinion bearing housing. I was thinking about 0.030" would be plenty, maybe I could use less. I tried the V9 cams in a spare set of cases, one spun free and the other very nearly did so I am guessing R5 or X cams would have about 0.030" clearance in those cases.

I've never seen a spec. for the lobe to race clearance but I agree that .030 clearance is plenty. .010 - .015" would be enough in my opinion. I read where someone put layers of tape around the lobe and if it cleared he was happy. ( don't know how many layers or how thick the tape was. )

I also agree with your estimate about the R5 and X cams but only if all 3 cams use the same size base circle. Probably Andrews does.

I probably wouldn't choose to do this but I found the chamfering of the lobe to gain clearance shown in this article to be interesting, but this is being done on an EVO and I don't know if it could be applied to an ironhead. But hey, if you did it you could tell people you ground your own cams.

Thanks for advice Needspeed. I have seen how nrhs grind the side of the cam lobes but I don't think I will do that. I'm not running cam shims and Andrews cams have a lot of sideways clearance meaning that bevel might get awful close to the roller.
