It almost sounds like one of the bolts that hold the tensioner on has fallen out. If it was my bike, I wouldn't ride it until I got that cover off, I've seen vids of shenanigans happening to the tensioner that make you wonder how the hell...

In one vid the block of aluminum that made up a bolt boss disappeared as if it got beat around so much in there it dissolved into the oil...I mean anything can happen, I wouldn't ride it

Thanks to everyone for the replies and info. I did another Google search for crankcase sucking primary oil and a couple of the archives came up. Most of the items covered in this thread came up as possibilities in those threads also. One item discuss quite a bit was the sprocket shaft seal and it's failure, could cause this type of problem. To be honest I've been a mechanic most of my life but I've never considered myself a very good one. When I did my transmission and clutch last year I really kind of half-ass it. I had never worked on a transmission and did not have the cash to spend on Anderson gears. I brought cheap Chinese gears and I believe my main shaft only cost about $38 off of eBay new was supposed to be made in the USA in Cleveland, I believe that's what the ad said on eBay. On my clutch I removed one plate and on the clutch bearing, I believe that's the right name i reweld the center. Last week I put new Jets in the carb, info I got from here best site on the net for Ironheads. With all that being said my bike is running pretty decent and shifts great except for a third and fourth ( it makes a noticeable single tap noise when I shift into third and fourth probably from my shity in play check) another thread on that coming if needed. One last question is the sprocket shaft seal the one on the right hand side with the metal retainer and four bolts holding it on? Thanks, I know sitting on a hand grenade

Nope, the sprocket shaft seal that is hanging off your crankshaft. It is the behind the engine sprocket in the primary case. When I was having trouble it was that seal that I first replaced. Didn't help, the problem turned out to be the case race that supports the main bearings behind that seal. But you are losing oil a lot faster than I was. Someone else pointed out the support for footpeg or bolt for primary adjuster. I have a hunch that you have a bolt missing from your chain adjuster and oil from the primary is pouring into the crankcase. From there it will get pumped up to your oil tank. You really need to pull the primary cover off again and check everything out. I had my transmission in and out a few times trying to find the problem and fixing up the previous owner's mistakes. It gets easier after a few tries and get yourself a genuine manual if you don't already have one and follow it to the letter.

Yes, T Clark I will check all the things you suggested. I've had the primary cover off a hundred times working on the clutch, and yes the transmission is not too difficult to get oh and put back in, and working on it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Thanks again for all the help and I will try to post back once I get the primary cover off and start working on it. Before I go though one last question are there any paper washers or o-ring seals that go on the inside of the primary case that I might be missing, I have a factory service manual on CD, just wondering

Don't think there are any o-rings or gaskets to worry about. I'm just wondering if the seal behind the engine sprocket shaft is missing or not fitted properly. Only one way to find out.
