tire compound has a lot to do with it. inflation pressure goes hand in hand with loading. so even with a lite load, the max psi will wear out the center faster.
be glad, i smoked tires with 3k on them, to the point i will go to the darkside if the commander II's do not work out. also of note, the so called ball bearing tires or call them mushroom tires will wear in the middle more so than an english tire (flat bottom). they are fine if you hang 10 all the time as they give you more contact area in the curve but i hate them.

Been running Commander II's, for the past 12K miles, they're well scrubbed but hardly worn. I expect to get 20k out of them, weird? I think so. If so, great bang for the buck.

My front tire wore uneven after I had an accident with a deer. I did this, only instead of strings I used two straight edges. Even wear now after I replaced tire.

I've replaced tires one at a time but it seems I was putting on one tire every year. If you can afford it, go to a matching pair. I got 6500 miles out of my first set, Almost 10k out of my second set. I had 4k on my third set when I was hit and wiped out my front wheel back in Nov '15, so I had the dealer go ahead and change out the rear tire, too. That cost more than if I had bought a paired set thru J&P and the Mount and balance. I'll never do that again.. I have about 2k on this set now and they still look new.

bustert, do the Scorcher 31s fall into you 'mushroom/ball bearing' category ?

night-train, The commander II's are on my consideration list. Good to hear they are working out for you. I would have been happy with 12k.

Stairman, good info. The only abuse the bike has suffered so far as been rough roads. Some really rough. I know that can be enough to throw a wheel out of alignment. I hope the shop tech would have caught it during the check ride.

Toejam503, good advice, thanks. I am fortunate that at this (late) stage of my life, I can afford to replace both at the same time. (It has not always been the case )

Those are the cold pressures listed on the frame sticker (yeah I know .. definitely a new bike) but ya know Joe, it could easily have been caused by something as simple as that.
I'll be asking about this at the shop.
I don't think dropping a couple psi would hurt.

maybe 2 inches of contact area. i can break traction @ 70 mph with hard shift. the english style will have 4>4.5 inches contact. they might not corner as well as a sport tire but they are very predictable and my 1974ch actually corners better than my 01 sport. at low speeds i do not like the drop off feel the sport tire gives. the commander II have double this contact, we will see or the darkside i come.
