The only reasons I was considering changing the whole switch was bc I thought barrel would be stronger and more secure. I've never had anything with a barrel key so it's good to know they aren't what they seem.

So if I buy a blank off the internet I can then take it anywhere that cuts keys?

I got mine cut at an Ace hardware, they had the right blank and it was only a couple of bucks a piece.

Don't change the switch if you can avoid it.
The factory switches are great but the replacements are crap. I bought one from local dealer and it lasted 3 weeks then came apart and almost left me stranded. I took it back to the dealer and they gave me another one, this one lasted 2 weeks.... so took that back to them and they just refunded my money Next I went to my indy and he got me another switch from DS it looked exact same as the Taiwan made switch the dealer sold me. and it lasted 3 weeks as well. At this point I was getting pretty upset about them coming apart so fast. My indy gave me a DS barrel type and it has been good for 3 years now as daily transpo.

My factory switch lasted from 85 until 3 years ago and that is over 100k miles

just get a key made and keep the original switch if possible.

That's not very good luck!! I was looking at getting the DS barrel switch, the j&p barrel switch has good reviews and is only $20. After your experiences though I think I'll just stick with the factory switch, I've never had an issue with it so why fix something that isn't broke, the outside threaded ring did about vibrate off the other day but luckily I looked down and seen it and was able to hand tighten it while I was going down the road. Would there be any reason not to use blue loctite on that securing ring? I haven't noticed it coming loose since then but about the time I think it will be fine I'll lose it on the road.
