Default 92 Buell RS Redo

Owned this bike for many years. Was time for a face lift.



The reason for this makeover was the gas tank leaking.



After cutting it open in order to do the needed repairs...Back to good again.



Still have a bit of work to do..But really on the down side of what use to be a large hill.





Going with the RS tail for now, But will also do up the RSS tail for later use..





Wasn't really happy with the way I mounted the boost guage..



The boys at Air Tech makes a repo dash for the RSS model which has a hole for a oil temp guage (The RS didn't have that). Looks like a good place to mount the Boost guage.



They make just about all the body parts for both the RS and RSS.



Had these put back for over 10 years...Will be using the ones that Buell had on the bike.



Had a time with picking a color...Really wanted a color a little darker than what Buell had on it. (Candy Ruby Red)



A little info on the motor work that has been done to it.
Being a gear head, And having the Tim Allen thing going on (More Power) needed to get big time HP out of it...
The first thing was the Turbo, That helped alot!
Next was the NOS..It acted as a intercooler...But was hard on the lower end.



Did a Jim's "A CUT ABOVE" crank pin and Carrillo rod set, JE pistons, Total Seal Gapless Rings. And a 54% blance factor on the crank ass.
As long as I was inside the motor...Went with Axtell Pro-Street Cast Iron Cylinders.
Installed a Pro-Flow oil pump, Sifton Piston Oil Supply Squirters and Zipper's windage plates.
Next was a set of race prep Thunderstorm Heads with Baisley's O/S hi-tulip valves, Jim's springs, S&S rollor rocker arms and Billet Two piece Covers, Jim's titanium push rods, Leineweber E5-T weld-on cams, Jim's Hydrosolid Tappets.
Now that it was making well over 130 HP...(Without being on the button) The clutch was not holding very well..Did a Barnett Scorpion (Installed an Easy-Boy coz of the heavy springs that I ended up using) with a Zipper's Trap Door and Baker's shift drum..
The Ignition is V-Thunder Hyperfyre...which has a progamable rpm NOS arming, Crane Hi-Intensity Coil, Nology Engineering primary boost coils and Hot Wires..
On the frame..running a 180 on a 5.5 PM rim with there 4 piston brake and rotor, Bartel's swing arm kit, dual PM 6 pistons (12 in total) on the front. Also it has one-off billit controls and plates.

How I got this bike...Well...Did a trade....Bought this XR-1000 new in 83..



Did all the Hot Rod tricks to it for doing 1/4 mile drag racing...Really was going to grow old with it...Only Harley that I bought new..



Done some Hot-Roding (Head work, cams, ign. and Clutch) on a 89 RS for a guy and put a few miles down on it....Thats all it took...Goodbye XR...Hello RS.
I was sold..!!

If anyone has a mind for one of these Antique Buell's...here is one that was on ebay for $3,500.(It didn't sale)
Don't know much about it. The seller said it was all there but for the motor...

Do think that it would be safe to say that there may be less than 50 (If that many) of these RS's still on the Road in the US.

I have only seen 5 counting mine.

One... was in Daytona Bike Week of 98, it was a 91 year model...
Two... was one that I did some Hot Rod motor work on, it was an 89....
Three ...was in Vegas..The guy was riding it, a 91 year model, he was from Alaska.
Four... was a 92 that was on display in the Guggenheim Museum in Vegas....
And number five is the one that I have been growing old with..

And if I could lay an eyeball on yours would be 7

Just saw this post. I have seen Dan's RS1200s. Could pass for new. They were in the office of his old shop. Heated in winter .... A/c in summer. That was 2 years ago.

I still have both of them. When we open the EBR dealership I plan to put on a display of Buells thogh the years with all of my bikes.

I will have the following:

1990 RS 1200

1992 RSS 1200

1996 S2

2000 X1

2004 XB12R

2008 1125R (my machinist Zachs bike)

Beautiful RS!!! I plan to have an RS someday. Currently I have a '96 S2T with 55,000 miles on it and various mods.

What kind of voodoo magic did you do to utilize the stock A/C cover with the turbo? I'm doing an n/a build on my S2T soon but would love to add a turbo some day just because.

I actually added a few gauges to my dash by making a new dash panel out of an old Carbon Fiber HamCam cover of unknown origin that was hanging on my wall for years.

Default I have been Ripped Off

I bought a Re-Pop Fuel Tank from Airtech that I can't even use...

It was made with the bottom glassed in so low into the shell it would not mount onto the bike...

Not only would it not fit but had a world of other problems with how it was made....

(1) Bottom located to low causing the tank not to go forward, riding on the frame tubing...
(2) The need to glass all the flanges longer in-order to match up with the OG body work...Mostly all the seams are off.
(3) Bottom of the tank only having 0.080" thickness of glass...
(4) The coating being 3/4" thick on the right side and hardly none on the left side...
(5) Glass not rolled down at the front of the tank....
(6) The bat-wing on the left side sticking up at the front of the tank...
(7) Having 3/8" NPT bungs instead of the 1/4" that Buell used...
(8) No threads for the tank vent..

Called them up and told them of all these problems that their tank had ...
They said they would get back you me with what they was going to do about them....

Waited to hear back from them.... Nothing but dead air....
So I called them ... Wanted to send it back and have my money refunded ....
They was having no part of that... Fact is, they said your on your own, make it work....!!!

The tank was sitting right on the frame tubing at the back of the tank, not allowing it to go forward and down....
They said to grind on the bottom of the tank for the needed room...
Whoa .... I didn't like hearing that at all.... With their tank having the bottom so far down, pretty sure I would be looking at a hole or two ... Photos shows about 3/8" difference between the Oem Buell tank and theirs...







E-mailed these photos to them .... Waited for a return call to talk over my finding..... And waited and waited ect...

So I called them again.... Same story .... Your on your own, make it work...

Being I was getting NO support from Airtech .... I was on my own... Boy if I hadn't heard that before a few times...!!!

Had a chat with a few Guys that run shops in my complex about what I could do to this this ill fitting tank to fit ...
All of them said that the only thing that could be done is to raise the bottom up to clear the frame tubing....

That was also my thought.... Being that I was stuck with it, that's what I did...!!!

Lookie what I found...







Kinda spooked me to find the glass only 0.080" thick in the bottom of that tank....
If I did any grinding down there, I sure there would be holes in it ....

When I bought this POS Airtech assured me it was a Plug & Play tank, said it was made from the OG Buell mold....
I finding that hard to believe ..... And here is why that is....



Asked them why their tank has the raised up decals on it..... Now get this, they told me it was for locating the decals to go back on..... My tank didn't have that, or the other 15 RS Buells I seen over the years ....

I was getting nothing but lies from these Boys.... They made a mold from a OG Buell tank that had those decals on it... Their tank was NOT made from the OG Buell mold that they said it was....

Now that the bottom is out got a much better fit... Still a world of glass work will need to be done to get the seams to line up....

A lot of work to get the Bat wing down on the left side will also be needed...

But.... Now that I see how this tank was made .... I'm spooked of it...
Tell ya the truth, I'm really glad I did cut out the bottom... Seeing how it was made now opened my eyes to what could had been third degree burns or even a early death due to their incompetence...!!!
