I think that's right. There was an ex-Marine combat vet on the VFD with me for a time, and he helped me through the after effects of a couple calls that haunted me. It's the byproduct of seeing and doing things that shouldn't have to be seen and done. You can't accept it as being normal, but you can't lock it away or run from it either, you just gotta remember that life goes on, and you need to also. Sounds easy, but it isn't, and I can't imagine what it is for those who've done that stuff full time and therefore see more of it than I have.

I know it was the right way for me. Spent 34 months in Vietnam during the war. When I came back there was no help. The VA did not help much. Alcohol made it worse. Took several years, but I quit drinking completely, kept busy doing something all the time, and spent a lot of time alone. It never went away, but I can live with it.
