How much oil a Harley leaks is directly linked to the mechanical skill level of the owner.

I have 3 running HDs, an EVO a Shovelhead and an Ironhead, I ride them all hard, none of them leak.

Heh, heh....

Installation error, wear and high pressure swings are the main things that come to mind after of course too much oil.

I've been working on this oil leak page in Sportsterpedia to see where and whys on oil leaks. It's not done yet.
But I have noticed a lot of the entries do or can lead you back toward crankcase pressure problems.

I'm not sure if it pertains to all Sportsters or just ones that are rode hard or just ones not breathing good or what.
But for some of us, high sustained RPM weeps oil.
My tie to blowby or crankcase pressure....

It's usually a tune up problem that causes slobbering when run hard.

Too much spark advance is fine until you go WFO and load it up.
The ensuing detonation unseats the rings causing excessive blow by.

Are you talking about those engines that don't get rebuilt at the end of every racing season ?

That's possible. My "Factory fresh" 74 with less than 5,000 miles has sprung a slight leak. I was thinking it was just the breather vent, but probably not.

It's been fine for nearly 50 years. Wonder why now, all of a sudden ?

(I don't ride that one hard)
